Tumblr Thread: Pokémon's Probability System Is Madness

Tumblr just loves to go all in on meticulously studying the ins and outs of different movies, shows, video games, etc. It's a place of countless rabbit holes. This one in particular is a great one to fall down. It takes a look at one of the world's most loved and adored video games, Pokémon.

1.

Text - rocketreturns remember the mirage island shit in pokemon r/s/e how fucked was that nonsense ask-oncies-jizz you had to talk to an old man once per day. then the game would generate 2 random number bytes. those bytes would have to both match the also random and unseeable personality values of one of your party pokemon. assuming you had a full party of 6 that was roughly a 1/10000 chance. thats rarer than finding a shiny. and this wasn't once per random encounter this was once per day. this

2.

Text - this literally sounds like some fake forum post from 2004 but it was 100% real they really put this in the game un fucking believable gudroo between this, feebas, and the regis im beginning to think the fucking riddler played a part in the development of r/s/e atrius97 For those who are unaware, Feebas could only be found in one location by fishing in a pool of water. However there are 400 tiles of water, and only 6 random tiles will allow you to fish up a Feebas. These tiles are randomly

Text - The Regi's, (Regirock, Regice and Registeel), all had a puzzle to unlock their domain. Written in Brallie, in some hidden caves. The puzzles required you to: Find the Pokemon Relicanth and Wailord and have them in the first and last slots of your party. (In Emerald version these instructions were reversed, Wailord first, Relicanth last.) This unlocks the other 3 puzzles. For Regice: Wait 2 minutes with the game on without moving your player. (In Emerald the instructions had you run a lap

4.

Text - For Regirock: The instructions had you move right twice, then down twice, then have a pokemon use the move Strength. (In Emerald it was left twice, down twice and then Rock Smash instead.) For Registeel: Walk to the center of the room and have a Pokemon use the move Fly, which is a move that would usually let you fast travel around the map, and doesn't work indoors except for this one single puzzle room. (In Emerald Version, they had you use the move Flash instead.)

Text - Footnote: There was also a misprint in the original Ruby Sapphire Guidebook which showed the Pokemon Trapinch as having no evolutions, making the Vibrava and Flygon unobtainable to those who didn't accidentally levelup Trapinch until it evolved seemingly for no reason. fyeahpokemoncreepypasta R/S/E were scarier than most creepypasta. Text - banshees-deactivated20180812 Attempting to use the Mew Encounter exploit with a Pokemon with a special stat of over 250 results in encountering a glitch trainer who causes the game to just flip the absolute fuck out when trying to calculate how much money to award you afterwards. This causes the relevant memory poiner to shoot off to god knows where, and as a result it just sets a solid two hundred unrelated hexadecimal values in the game to 99 in the process, filling your party with leve

Text - prettyflyforajeskai Red and blue are why QA teams were invented biggaybunny for fuck's sake they weren't badly programmed. They were bleeding edge. It's so easy to forget that but Red and Blue were literally pushing the limits of what they could fit on the cartridge.

8.

Text - They used every trick in the book. In that way, the programming behind them is GENIUS. It's frankly a lost art, in this era where hardware is insanely cheap and scalable, when you can just keep throwing more resources at the problem. But Red & Blue were when programmers had to get creative. Not currently using a piece of memory? Repurpose it, we can't just leave it lying around. Only have a couple registers? Juggle them, keep careful track so we can restore them when we needed. Does this

9.

Text - And all this WORKED. I guarantee you 99% of children playing this never saw a bug in casual play. MODERN games are buggier by a landslide. Remember when X&Y came out and there was an ENTIRE CITY you couldn't save in because it'd DELETE YOUR SAVE? Imagine that happening in the days of Red&Blue. It couldn’t have. I can turn on my red cartridge TODAY and have it work. And the bugs that did exist, those edge cases they missed? They produce this behavior because the game REFUSES TO CRASH. Sure

10.

Text - Y'all looking down from your 64-bit quad-core smartphones with 128GB SD cards like Red & Blue were programmed by amateurs. What, you also going to bitch that the Wright Brothers didn't make a jet engine? These are artifacts from pioneers who wrote the goddamn book that others would use as gospel. Sincerely, a pissed off goddamn programmer.

Text - celestialmechanic The Game Boy has 8 kilobytes of RAM. Most of the icons on this site could not fit into the working memory of a Game Boy intact. #Pokémon

Text - 3 40screamingfrogs I just watched a man release every Pokemon he caught except for a level 5 Magikarp, waste all of his money and throw away all of his items at the Pokemon center just before the elite four in Pokemon red in order to trap himself in an unwinnable game. He couldn't beat the elite 4 with a level 5 magikarp, and it couldn't learn the hm moves necessary to leave victory road, and Magikarp only knew splash and had absolutely no chance of beating the level 40ish Pokemon there s

Text - a autumngracy What the actual fuck jacethebeltsculptor For some context, this is from a video series called “SoftLockPicking" where a guy's followers come up with challenges to get him stuck in an unwinnable game and he tries to see if he can get out of them. Sort of a video game escape artist. Source: 40screamingfrogs #Pokémon #this is insabe

Text - commandtower-solring-go The original Twitch plays pokemon was a Twitch based event from a few years back where users of the Twitch Chat could submit button presses based on the layout of an old Game Boy to play Pokemon Red. Eventually they did manage to beat the game. But along the way it had sparked a huge following and somehow developed it's own lore based on the pokemon caught and the names they were given. However, at Mount Moon, Twitch decided to take the Helix Fossil, an item that c

17.

Text - Due to the nature of the system, a lot of the time the character just would walk around in circles for hours on end, and one thing that would happen constantly would be that they would open their item menu and try to 'use' the Helix Fossil. Since the item had no function, people adopted the idea that they were 'consulting' the Helix Fossil for advice, and that it was their lord and saviour. What makes this Lady Helix so incredible is that, there was an incredibly small chance that they wo
