Growing up, it's important to listen to your parents. Generally, they have a lot of insight and experience that you lack at this point in your life—plus a healthy dose of resulting cynicism. Once you've graduated from their care and have your own place, you get to live your life on your own terms, free to make your own mistakes and live your own life—which often ends with you constantly asking them for advice anyways.
We value our parents and their advice, but some parents have trouble letting go and continue to interject and impose directives long after they're appropriate—or welcome—and often on things that aren't their business in the first place. Whether or not you want to own your own dog as an adult is one of those things, and demanding that your adult child get rid of their pet—in their own home—is downright insane. It's unfortunately what this Redditor was facing when their parents demanded they get rid of their dog because of their brother's allergies.
