Everyone has the freedom to raise their kids the way they want. Whether or not they end up completely screwed up is unfortunately the kid's problem. If it's not illegal, you can do pretty much whatever. You can raise your kid to think that they're literally chosen by the universe to bring upon the end times. You probably shouldn't do that, but if you feed them regularly, the rest is mostly up to you.
Speaking of feeding your kids, this mom has decided for her child, and therefore everyone around her, that her child cannot know what sugar tastes like. At heart it's a noble goal. Sugar is pretty bad for you. But at the same time, sugar is everywhere, especially at a child's birthday party. And giving your own kid completely unreasonable expectations to live by is bound to put them in a precarious situation.
This mom felt that it was her friend's responsibility to make sure no cake entered her kid's mouth. To the point that she feels the birthday boy needs punishment. Sounds like a fun mom.
