It's easy to find yourself in a situation where you're pretty sure the other person is being dumb or insane, but they're so confident about it that it makes you question your own reality.
When someone says something so uncouth, absurd or straight up dumb that we just can't believe them, it's reasonable to assume that they're just joking. When some dude says "do you want confetti on your fries" our brains do the social math and land on "haha, that would be crazy." But then when that same dude gets upset and says "why are you laughing at me, confetti is my favorite food" you're put into a corner where there's no graceful way out. So you shrug and go "fine dude. I guess go ahead and give me the piñata fries, extra birthday."
