Human beings are some of the only things on the planet that have so extensively built their own environment to live in. And you'd think that living in houses would give us some innate ability to do plumbing, but that would be wildly wrong. Our world is filled with construction fails of all kinds; upside down stairs, carpeted bathrooms, and pipes that go nowhere, to name a few. There are rules, but it's up to the builder to look at them.
