Since we haven't contacted actual aliens, all we can really do is lean on imagining our place in the universe. The flattering consensus is that humans are space orcsand we live on a death planet where invading aliens could be fought off by bears. Writing like this is a convenient way to feel nice about the finer points of human curiosity and social proclivities, especially when we're a character placed in space like this Tumblr thread imagining a human on a Vulcan ship.
