This guy probably should have seen this coming. Maybe we're just not part of the same generation but it's easy for me to see here where this was misinterpreted by the target of the comment. It's really easy for some misattributed reference to go afoul in environments like the workplace. A kudos all around is probably needed here for the way that everyone handles this situation. The girl sticks up for herself when she believes herself to be a target of harassment. HR follows through in a positive manner and then backs off once the guy is able to explain his actions in a rational (and non-abusive) way.
All these things line up for a good ol' fashioned gaffe.
