Unfortunately, there are a decent number of folks out there that'll give themselves over to weaving unnecessary webs of lies at social gatherings to try to make themselves "more interesting." This has a tendency to backfire at one point or another. It sounds like this girl didn't read the room properly, and came to learn her lesson in the value of just being honest with folks from the get. As will happen with liars, when they're confronted by someone who sees through their dishonest antics, they have a tendency to get a little bit nasty. It sounds like this guy felt bad based off how she handled having someone know that she making her whole bit up.
