'My parents disapproved of him': Woman sets her judgemental parents straight by disclosing how much her fiancé's construction company earns, upsetting both parties

It's frustrating when someone can't keep a secret, especially when you've literally just finished telling them that secret, and the words are barely out of your mouth before they're sharing it with everyone. Of course, you learn to never disclose your secrets to that person after being burned once by their blabbermouth, but it's a little more complicated when that person is your spouse.

It's also never easy living with a family who disapproves of your spouse due to their own haughty bias and preconceived notions. It feels like you can never win and their constant disapproval of the person who is most dear to you starts to erode all of your familial relationships.

The original poster writes that she fell for her fiancé when he supervised a roofing crew at her house who were replacing damage to her roof. When they first started dating, he was vague about his job, but later revealed he owns a construction company, eventually also revealing that he has significant rental income from corporate real estate that he owns.

The entire time they have been together OP's family has disapproved of her fiancé and makes snide remarks about him, insinuating that he is beneath her.

This came to a head when, while preparing for the couple's wedding, her parents mentioned a prenup. OP blurted out the fiancé's earnings, claiming to defend him, but he got upset at her for revealing his secret, and her family is also mad that she had been keeping this from them.

This has left OP stuck in the middle and unsure of what to do.

Readers declared OP to be in the wrong for telling her parents, largely voting "YTA" (You're the a-hole.) They felt that she had told her parents to defend herself and her parent's opinion of the kind of men she'd go for rather than to defend her fiancé himself.

See the original thread and responses below and make your own judgement.
