The facts of life are hard. But it's not like we can't massage some meaning out of them with a little clever wordplay or overly literal thinking. That's when it's a good time to be the type of person who's adept at taking things the wrong way. Why should you ever let someone get away with saying they're "tired" without demanding to know what kind of car they go on? Why should you ever just stand there and listen to someone describe themselves as a "pillar of the community" or whatever you column.
There's just too much wiggle-room for anything to not sort of mean a few other things, and we should all take every opportunity we have to take things overly literally and make the people's lives around us figurative hell.
It's not up to us, and we're not totally down for it, but there's nothing left. Which means it's the right thing to do.
