Gotta be honest here, I would probably hide too. There is nothing worse than being forced into engagement with someone when you are sleep-deprived and feel like generally being left alone.
The mother-in-law sounds a bit entitled especially since she insists on coming around despite being told to ring in advance. If her son really thinks that her actions are justified then he can come home to deal with her when she comes around.
Who needs enemies when you have in-laws like this. Reminds us of the time that this mother-in-law got offended when her DIL took back a gift that was rudely rejected.
