Firefighter school being a paramilitary entity can be quite rigid when it comes to rules, especially dress code. These institutions tend to have very different requirements for men and women depending on what they consider to be appropriately professional. When OP was in the fire academy, the women's dress code required that hair be worn in a neat bun. We have a feeling that the person who came up with this rule was not a woman. For if they were a woman, they would know that anything shorter than shoulder length hair makes for a super awkward, super messy, and super unprofessional bun.
So OP took matters into her own annoyed hands after being consistently written up for not complying with the dress code. She went the pixie cut route, big power move, and her superiors still tried to write her up but were not able to because technically she was complying with the dress code. The kicker of this whole situation? The following semester there was a man with long hair who wore it in a bun instead of cutting it, and the following semester the dress code was rewritten to be gender neutral. Hmm. Well, seems a little messed up but OKAY.
