Much like people assuming they won't be overheard speaking rudely about someone else in another language, a common assumption some people make are that car owners don't often know enough about their vehicle to have an understanding of what their mechanics do to it. As a result, sometimes a mechanic tries to charge a car owner more than they should to make a little extra cash — until they run into someone prepared to call them out. Redditor u/drunken-black-sheep took to the popular subreddit r/pettyrevenge to talk about this run-in with a mechanic who tried to scam her by claiming her car needed several repairs immediately, including a new air filter. OP specifically mentions that she had checked the air filter before going to the shop that day, so she knew something was off — especially when the mechanic tired to get her to pay $1500 for all these "repairs."
Fortunately for OP, she seems pretty knowledgeable about cars and working with them, so she bought herself some time and arranged to call her dad, who must also be a big car guy, and pretend to ask her dad for help paying for the expenses. What unfolded sounds like an all-time great acting performance: both the OP and her dad on the phone started laughing hysterically at the mechanic and then watched him like a hawk to make sure he didn't do anything wacky to the car during the routine oil change she had actually gone for.
