All-Too-Accurate Memes That Confirm We Are Already Living in a Dystopian Future

When you watch a post-apocalyptic movie like Mad Max or Hunger Games, it's getting easier nowadays to imagine how these disheveled fantasy societies came to be so messed up. The more that the modern age goes hurling towards the abyss of unknown futures, the more clear it becomes that desert wastelands with scantily clad, grunge-gothic cross-dressers might not be so far off.

So maybe the world is heading towards a decent into Mad Max territory with gas prices skyrocketing, impossibly high cost of living, and historically low wages… oh and don't forget the discovery of plastic in everyone's blood stream. Living on a giant, rolling diesel island in the middle of the Mohave doesn't sound too crazy does it?

Time to shave your head.

Whether or not you're an experienced cage fighter, nobody is really ready for whatever comes next, however, we are certainly prepared to make fun of current plights and woes, softening the blow of potential hell-scape futures with what we do best-- Memes

A Loot-Sack of Lord of the Rings Memes For Your Consideration

There are a few unfortunate characters in Tolkien's stories of Middle Earth who just had a terrible time. The most notable and exceptional of these characters is the cursed Túrin Turambar from "The Children of Húrin," which is a personal favorite of mine from the novels created from the Christopher Tolkien edited manuscripts.

I thought that this absolutely heartbreaking tragedy of a tale would make an excellent opening for a "funny lotr memes list" and I'll take any chance to talk about Tolkien legendarium, so you're welcome in advance.

(Spoilers for "The Children of Húrin" ahead, so fair warning to stop reading here if it's on your must-reads list.)

Túrin is Tolkien's analog for Sophocles's classic tragedy "Oedipus Rex," and he lived in the First Age of Middle Earth. The two share multiple similarities, including unwittingly-incestuous relationships with estranged family members. Oedipus classically weds his mother Yocasta after murdering his father, the king. Túrin, meanwhile, unknowingly discovered his nude amnesiac sister, Niënor, on the grave of his murdered elven love in an elaborate plot laid by Glaurung, the first dragon of middle earth.

Despite the entirely non-romantic of the estranged sibling's reunion the two fell in love and wed. When Túrin defeats Gaurung in the story's climax, Gaurung removes the amnesia curse he placed on the now-pregnant Niënor, who remembers that her husband is actually her brother and commits suicide.

This poor bastard's life makes Golumn's possession by the ring and subsequent cave-dwelling days look like a stay at a holiday resort in comparison.

There are other similarities between the two that I'll save for another time. That's enough delightful excitement and mood-setting for now. Fantastic book.

Bride Fires Maid of Honor for Being a Buzzkill

Planning a wedding can bring out the absolute worst in people. That's pretty much impossible to avoid, and that seems to be what happened to u/Final_Cream6177, who shared her story about her fractured relationship with her Maid of Honor on Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole thread

Here's the scoop. u/Final_cream6177 enlisted her best friend Kathy, a professional wedding planner, to be her MOH. Kathy had planned countless weddings before, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. That is, until a couple of weeks before the bachelorette when Kathy began to personally opt out of some of the plans she made for the bridal party. When the bride confronted her about it, Kathy expressed discomfort about drinking alcohol and the stripper portion of the weekend. The bride felt "heartbroken" and tried to discuss it with Kathy to see if she would change her mind, but no dice. Kathy made her decision, which prompted the bride to abruptly dismiss Kathy from her Maid of Honor duties and the bridal party entirely. When u/Final_cream6177 shared what happened with the other members of her party (and later, on Reddit), the responses she got were less than comforting.

We've seen other wedding stories like this. Such as this one when a vegan bride cancelled her wedding after discovering her husband went behind her back and cancelled all vegan meals for the reception.

Update: Kitchen Drama, Conflict and Owner Abuse Leads to Resignation of FOH Lead and Chef

This chef shared the conflict in their restaurant that led to the resignation of the FOH lead and then the chef themselves. They shared their own resignation in a second "update" thread where they discussed that the conflict between them and the FOH lead, who had quit in the previous post, had put them in the owner's crosshairs. After a tense discussion between the two, the chef quit too.

This thread was posted in two parts to the r/KitchenConfidential subreddit by Reddit user u/PhoonTFDB, who shared their experiences in this kitchen. Often kitchen staff will take to this small subreddit to share these types of stories, hence the name "kitchen confidential."

It doesn't really sound like there is a victim in this thread; everyone kinda sounds like a bunch of a-holes duking it out to see who can be the biggest a-hole. But, from what I've heard, some kitchens are just like this, with everyone constantly battling it out to see who can be the top dog.

No matter who is in the wrong here this is clear: This is a toxic workplace. Regardless of who is purveying or causing this culture, that remains a fact.

Commenters had this to say about the thread

"'Don't talk back to me or I'll violate labor laws at you.' Is one of the most hilarious self-owns I've heard in a while." remarked user Saxong about the boss's challenge to the chef.

"Yeah sounds like everyone including you [is] an a-hole here," said user AuWolf19. To which the original poster commented and agreed.

College Student Encouraged By Reddit To Ghost His Bad Manager

Reddit can be an excellent source for anonymous venting, yet this story proves that it can also be used to make productive life decisions, like ghosting your job when your manager treats you like you're less than human.

This thread was posted by Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit by user u/American_Psycho34, a full-time college student who requested time off from their gig as a hotel bartender over a month in advance of their first week of classes that semester. When that week finally came around, the student's request was completely ignored by his manager.

According to the Redditor, this manager from Hell claimed that because the student was scheduled for work that week, it was on the student to sort out his shift schedule. The manager refused to discuss the matter further and said he would see the student that Monday.

That's when u/American_Psycho34 turned to Reddit for some advice, and after going through the feedback, he decided to ghost his manager without any notice. Considering that his boss was unwilling to empathize with the Redditor's need to balance work and school, the student owed nothing to his manager in return.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 40% of full-time undergraduate students were employed in 2020. If nearly half of college students are working jobs on the side, managers need to be willing to empathize with their employees and their school commitments.

We've seen other stories like this in recent months. Such as this manager who wouldn't approve an employee's overtime.
