As stupid as is sounds to say: we're used to seeing normal things. So when we see an everyday item used in an estranged sort of way, it can cause a visceral feeling of discomfort. Video Game companies will literally try to monetize anything these days... To be fair there are a lot of games out there that essentially make gameplay out of what is essentially chores. Yes, I'm looking at you Animal Crossing, the game that literally has you pick weeds and pay off a mortgage. But they at least usually do a decent job of making the gameplay rewarding, threatening, or otherwise distanced from reality. Usually these will be essential features of the game too, not something shoehorned in via DLC.

Isn't it crazy the effect that working from home has had on some of us? For YEARS this guy probably got away with being utterly abusive to his employees. While locking that tragic part of his personality away from his life at home and, by the sounds of things, isolating them from its effects.
