'They pulled the corporate version of negging on me': Worker shamed by current employer for getting a new job after being denied a raise

The owner has bought a second home, the VP has a new Porche in their garage, and the company is turning money hand over fist—enough to the point they're expanding by buying up actual real estate that's being claimed back under operational costs. Meanwhile, inflation has increased by 6% in the last year—you might have even taken a pay cut during the pandemic—and you're finding it hard to make ends meet on your current salary. The company is doing very well, your contributions have been increasingly meaningful, and your skills have increased—now would be a great time to ask for a raise… right? Well, wrong. Despite an obvious boon and constant cash flow, when it comes to asking for a raise, suddenly, it looks like the company hasn't got two cents to rub together.

This worker shared their experience of being on the receiving end of "corporate negging" when they found a new job after being denied their request for a small raise to adjust for inflation. When they told their boss that they were leaving, their boss asked them what their new pay was going to be. You should never answer such questions, but the worker did anyways, promoting a negative remark from their boss about their new rate.

They shared their experience with Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit, getting a flurry of responses from readers sympathetic to their story. See their original post and some of the comments below. Next, see this worker who lost their job offer for trying to negotiate.

'Her kids are not my responsibility': Coworker invites herself to Broadway show, then complains she can't afford it

Here's a cautionary tale about letting coworkers into your personal life. This woman wrote to r/AmItheA**hole with a question about her role in a feud with her coworker: "AITA for telling my coworker her bad decisions and her kids are not my responsibility?"

As u/BroadwayThrowaway1 writes, the whole disagreement started because she was going to a Broadway show with her nine year old daughter. Broadway shows are so much fun — the bright lights, singing and dancing, and colorful costumes can be unforgettable. But these shows don't come cheap. At their least expensive prices, most Broadway plays still cost three figures, even for the nosebleed seats. For lots of people, the only way to get into a high-budget show is to enter the lottery system and hope for a last-minute discount ticket.

So it's odd that this woman's coworker decided she wanted to go too. That's right, the OP didn't invite her, this woman invited herself and her daughter, effectively crashing the OP's mother-daughter outing. Even worse, the OP writes that their two daughters don't even get along.

Some commenters sided with the OP, while others scolded her for not standing up for herself and her daughter. Check out the story below, followed by the AITA verdicts from commenters.

'So you know how to make people cry?': Dude flirts with a group of therapists at a bar, mocks their profession, leaves in tears

Will this encounter actually convince a human male to go into therapy? Time will tell…

Here's some advice for any dudes trying to flirt with a group of single women at a bar. Don't mock their profession, especially if said profession involves an acute awareness of human psychology. Because you're bound to end up regretting your decision-making.

This creep went up to this Redditor and her colleagues, who were visiting Atlanta for a work conference. They were studying to be therapists at the time and were going out for a drink after a long day of educational training. That's when this dude decided to ruin the Ladies' Night Out experience by inserting himself into the conversation and trying out some wildly unsuccessful pickup lines. Once he and his buddies learned that these women were therapists-in-training, he decided to make fun of them and insinuate that all they knew how to do was make patients cry. That's when OP decided to play along with this dude's little game. He told her to try making him cry, and boy did he regret that choice.

Let's just say that with one sentence, she knew exactly how to make this guy's face turn bright red, sending him off in an emotional fury. Keep scrolling below for the full story and for the best reactions in the comments section. When you're finished, check out these top dating flops.

'It feels invasive': Manager requests remote access to employee's personal computer during meeting, employee refuses

Welcome to another toxic workplace in which a manager thinks he has way more power than he does! In this case, we have a new horrible boss who doesn't understand how to gain access to his team's project. Rather than admit he needs help to gain said access, he has been forcing various team members to grant him remote access to their personal computers during Zoom meetings. Now that this Redditor is the next one on the team who is expected to do this, he is dreading the meeting.

Let's break down why this manager's expectations are beyond inappropriate. For starters, this is not someone's work computer we're talking about here. This is their personal computer… the same personal computer that includes text messages and search history. The Redditor also revealed that this search history prominently features several job websites, as he has been mass applying to other positions and does not want that information to be revealed to his manager (understandably).

As several folks in the comments section below suggested, OP is well within his right to deny his manager that remote access. He can explain that it's his personal computer and is not only uncomfortable doing this but he is also not required to do this, as this action is not specified anywhere in his contract. Furthermore, the employee can go a step further and set up a meeting with either IT or the office manager to help his boss gain access to the project on his own device. That level of initiative may be a win-win for everyone involved.

'The company saved £5k on fees, but got one day of work instead of five': Penny-pinching company gets taught a lesson when their traveling salesman is forced to fly coach

Bureaucratic bean-counting threatens every employee's work-life balance, for none more than the traveling salesmen of the world. To be totally frank, there's always a disconnect between the bean-counters of a company and the footmen because financial decisions are made in an office whereas the salespeople are out there in the trenches. You'd think that the man in the field can see things a bit more clearly than the man on the sidelines…

In this case, a traveling salesman who was accustomed to flying business class, taught his company a tough lesson about corner cutting. In an attempt to save £5,000 (or $6,385), the company decided to 'trim the fat' on their expenses for their employees, shoving OP into economy class instead of letting him fly in the business section. Bannished to the back of the bus!

Because of the discomforts of the flight, the resulting jet lag, and the 16+ hours lost to travel time, OP made a dramatic point about the importance of taking care of your footmen before consulting the bean-counters. 'Someone changed my schedule without my knowledge': Shift worker gets accused of a no-call, no-show on their day off

Yes, the schedule. The cornerstone, the Monolith, of shiftwork… Obey the schedule—lest you find yourself at odds with some angry shift manager who quotes its existence at you like scripture.

Managers love a good schedule, and they also like complaining about that schedule and blaming the schedule for all of their problems—even when they're the ones who made it. If they schedule you for a shift you couldn't normally work, suddenly, it's "It's on the schedule," "I've posted the schedule." "Sorry, can't change the schedule… You'll just have to make it work!" as if they waited up on a hill for 40 days and 40 nights, etching the dang thing into stone at the direction of some higher power… When they actually just slapped it together haphazardly over the course of an hour on a random Thursday when it was meant to be posted on the Monday before. Even then, they only sat down and actually put the thing together so that they could avoid helping their staff with handling a rush of customers.

This worker shared a series of text messages between their boss and themself, showing an exchange over an issue with the schedule. The messages we have start with the worker responding to their boss, saying that they have "absolutely no idea" why they're scheduled after being scheduled on a day that they didn't usually work and where they had no availability.

You might think that not scheduling workers on days where they have no availability, at least without asking first, would be common sense, but you'd be surprised how many managers do this out of petty spite, desire for control, or simply in order to fill a need without having to have a tough conversation.

The worker had clearly been caught out off guard and unaware of changes to the schedule—but their boss's response was not one of understanding, telling the worker that it was their "response"—ibility to check the schedule every week. As punishment, they were given a no-call, no-show. The worker's response, trying to explain the situation, went unresponded to.

Frustrated, they shared their experience with a popular Reddit sub, where the screenshots of the exchange went viral, buoyed by a heated discussion on the topic.

The worker returned later with an update, telling how another manager who "hates" them had created the schedule… and shared that they are also friends with the General Manager of the company.

There haven't been any further updates from the worker regarding how they are faring in their role under the current situation, but keep reading below to see their original post, the reactions, and the update.
