Sartre said "hell is other people." And while he was mostly talking about the existential dread of constantly feeling judged by others, the quote is pretty easily applicable to being in a relationship with someone you hate.
There's seldom a good reason to stay in a relationship when you dread the person you're with, but it can be difficult to come to that realization. Given that challenge, sometimes our feelings or circumstances come to a head, and that realization is all but made for us. Particularly when you find them in bed with your boss. Under most circumstances, that's a pretty good indicator that things aren't exactly gonna work out.
But hey, even though breakups suck, they're generally good in the long run. Why spend time with other people who make your life hell?
