If you have an idiot boss, it's important to remember that to them, the impression they get of the work you do is a lot more important than the actual amount of work you do. IT sounds counter-intuitive, and extremely stupid, but at a stupid workplace, that's just how it is. Add in a healthy dose of favoritism and crap work politics, and you've got yourself a real frustrating 9-5. That happened in this case where OP went above and beyond to actually do his job correctly only to be reprimanded for making his own supervisor look bad. And when management started bending over backwards to find OP to be at fault for literally anything, the choice became pretty clear; it was a good opportunity to part ways.
Sometimes managers forget that they work with people and not at them, and it leads to some seriously weird power trips. Like thisboss who kept reminding an employee that she could quit at any time, so she did.
