It takes a special kind of jerk to chop down living plants just to be petty. But for some people, like the neighbors in the OP's story, claiming the rights to their own property supersedes everything else. After all, that's a horrible way to welcome new people to the neighborhood. It also signals right away that those people aren't interesting in being friendly or even communicating. At least the OP and their parents got the last laugh!
