Managers will reprimand you for a variety of things that are sorta kinda understandable: being on your phone at work, being consistently late, etc. This manager, however, scolded one of his employees for not laughing at a customer's uncomfortable joke about her weight.
The employee, who works at a pizza restaurant in a food court, shared his story via this thread on Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit. After asking two women he was serving if they wanted to add bread and pasta to their meal and make their order a combo, the two women laughed, said no, and then added, "If you couldn't tell we're fat enough as it is." Yikes! There's not that much you can do in this awkward moment. u/wagman43 chose to ignore the joke and go ahead with putting in the order.
His manager, who saw the interaction, threatened to write him up if something like this happened again. He believed the server should have just laughed along and told them they weren't overweight. Perhaps so, but the reality is this was an awkward, unforeseen situation that really wasn't the server's emotional burden to take on. Last time we checked, that kind of labor is simply not part of his job description.
