This team leader realized they needed to take a stand when their meddling middle manager tried to increase their bonus by leaning up their team and pushing higher volumes of work onto fewer people. So, this effective and compassionate team leader pulled each of their team members aside and instructed them not to put hours of their own unpaid time into extra projects to appease the higher-ups. Their silent suffering and extra effort would do nothing but convince the higher-ups that they had made the right call. No, they had to hit the managers where it hurt -right in the bonus.
This middle manager is far from the first to think they can get away with pulling the rug out from under their lowest-level worker's feet and save money on labor costs by pushing more work onto fewer people. It's a business move as old as time, yet managers will still be patting themselves on the back for thinking of this. It might make money in the short term, but it will kill morale and burn out all of their workers. But they'll still get that short-term bonus, so what do they care?
