Horrible Things That Are Somehow Legal

There exists a crappy balance between legality, convenience and profitability that we run into every day. Whether it's a company making their infrastructure deliberately confusing, someone making claims that are technically not unprovable, or slight miserable inconveniences, some stuff just feels like it shouldn't be allowed. For some intriguing adventures, here are things people later found out were illegal.

Text - jseego 365 points · 8 days ago G Lying through your teeth on "news" shows because you claim you're actually "entertainment". Even while it has "news" in the title of the station. Being able to lie through your teeth on an opinion show just bc it's an opinion show. Opinions should be opinions about facts. Opinion should not be an excuse for slander or making knowingly false statements in the media.

Text - SultanSaatana 8.2k points · 8 days ago Also unrealistically-low "serving sizes" on packs of crisps or candy. They do this just so they can put the number of "calories/fat/sugar per serving" as a lower number.

Even while the whole world is trying to survive this pandemic, we're still dealing with this major issue by employers. I work in health care, and I feel like I get shamed by my managers and coworkers when you call out. Especially when you work night shift.

Text - mondayisbOng0day 4.3k points · 8 days ago Spice/K2/Synthetic Weed. This may have changed in the last few years but I found it embarrassing that our country locks up thousands for actual marijuana but allowed that shit to be sold at every gas station and liquor store knowing damn good and well that it was hurting and killing people.

Almost every customer service rep I've ever talked to has like a line you have to cross in order to get anything beyond generic scripted responses that are designed to make you give up. I honestly think utility companies purposely design their system this way to cheat the customer.

Text - IDUU 409 points · 8 days ago Sending letters to home owners labeled "IMPORTANT MORTGAGE / FINANCIAL INFO" or "LAST WARNING / NOTICE" and having the inside look exactly like a bill, letterhead and little box in the corner with figures inside... all to then say "refinance with us" or "don't miss this opportunity for etc etc" Makes me heart skip every time thinking I've forgotten some critical bill until I open it.

Text - changebegger 362 points · 8 days ago Misleading potential employees in interviewing process. I've been duped once or twice Ongr 29 points · 8 days ago I was almost scammed into a MLM by a potential employer. I had applied for a job, but didn't qualify or whatever. I later got a call that he might have something else for me if I was interested. I had show up wearing a suit. After hours. Thinking back, red flags were flying high, but I was desperate-ish and young.
