'My coworker should have defended me': Employee forced to pay coworker's boyfriend $20 for a ride after coworker had been carpooling with employee for free

There are so many things this coworker could have done to avoid these consequences. Apparently, she had been getting a free ride to work with this Redditor for over a year, and this didn't seem to bother OP because it was on their way to work. Still, a very generous offer that in and of itself is worthy of some real gratitude.   When the Redditor's car needed to go to the shop, the coworker was informed that they wouldn't be able to use the employee's car on Monday and Tuesday of that week. First, the Redditor said they would find their own ride, but the coworker explained that since her boyfriend was off work that week, he could drive them both to the office. This is where things started to take a turn.    The boyfriend requested $20 from OP for those two days of carpooling. Perhaps he didn't know just how much OP had done for his girlfriend, but even if he didn't, this wasn't an offer worth accepting. OP declined and when the coworker asked about using OP's car again once it was fixed, OP decided to request some money for carpooling as well. It's called reciprocity after all!   The coworker got upset about it, clearly not seeing the hypocrisy in her behavior. Still, the fact that she couldn't confront her boyfriend about the $20 or even pay that amount herself since it was the least she can do says all we need to know about the health of this relationship. On this week's Top Karens list, we're covering a lot of ground: stage moms, posh customers, and even vegan Karens. At a certain point, one has to wonder when Karens will slow down, but the unfortunate truth of the matter is that the entitlement only seems to be getting worse in today's cultural climate.   Let's consider why that is. Most of the time, these Karen stories boil down to unruly authority waging a battle against folks who refuse to give in. This obviously says a lot about how our culture has evolved in terms of our collective reaction to people who are unnecessarily rude to employees, strangers, and others based on reductive factors like appearance, status, etc. The fact that we now live in a culture that no longer apathetically accepts this kind of behavior is certainly an improvement. However, the unfortunate part of this trend is that it seems like there have been consequences. Call me a lizard person, but I love hot and humid weather. My hair doesn't thank me, but it's kind of fun feeling like I'm sitting in the middle of a swamp. However, this is on the extremely important condition that I have somewhere cool to retreat to when it all gets to be too much. Ideally, this would come in the form of air conditioning's chilly embrace, but sometimes I can't be that fussy. This HR lady's blatant lie says just about everything one could say regarding the health of this work environment. Here, we have a two-part story for you about an employee who learned that the raise he and his coworkers were promised was never going to happen in the first place. On top of that, the woman from HR seemed completely unapologetic about the lie as well.   The update to this thread was posted to Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by u/ImThe1Wh0, who clearly was having trouble stomaching this news. After some time thinking things over, the Redditor figured out the perfect plan to get a little petty revenge and malicious compliance at the same time. Since he was told that the company was trying to cut costs in any way possible (this was perhaps the main reason why his promised raise was outright denied to him), he reconsidered an upcoming purchase for the office that had yet to be fully processed.   That purchase was a request by the very same HR lady to refurnish her office. Now, it was in fact within the employee's jurisdiction to make judgment calls on purchases, so he decided to reject the request and deem it an unnecessary purchase. The reality is he's completely in the right here. It's not like HR was incapable of doing her job without this order. This woman is wondering if she's the reason her latest haircut went so poorly.  Recently on Twitter, people were discussing "haircut trauma," with some people mocking the idea, and more serious folks knowing exactly what that meant. Hair is a very important indicator of oneself, after all, it's one of the first things people notice about you, and one of the ways you are judged upon first impressions. So if you've ever had a hair stylist botch your hair really badly, you know that it can be a rough experience until those strands grow back. Even if your hair looks great afterward, the wrong stylist can make you want to avoid getting your hair cut ever again if they make you feel bad during the process. It seems like that was the case with this person, u/Diligenttemporary, who found a hairstylist to cut her hair. But the OP failed to mention that she has a condition that makes her hair look a bit stragly, and instead kept silent about her condition during the cut. But that led to some unfortunate miscommunication, and the OP ended up walking out.  It seems like a lot of people are anxious or too shy to tell their stylist what they actually want. Of all the times to be shy and reserved, this is not it! Even a small miscommunication can have big implications for your hair. The difference between a bob and a trim can be easily mistaken, or your hair could easily be dyed bleach blonde when all you wanted was a light brown shade. Some companies' policies don't allow overtime, as paying minimum wage employees a slightly more humane salary is just not in their budget. Despite this, managers can overrule this when holidays arrive and they are in dire need of help. In this case, OP was working at a retail store; unsurprisingly, this was the type of company that paid its employees little but expected a lot. The holidays were fast approaching, and management knew that they were way behind, thus they would need many hands on deck. So management told OP and the rest of the employees that whoever wanted to work overtime, was allowed to do so. In fact, they were allowed to work as much overtime as they wanted. Assuming employees wouldn't work that much more anyway, the managers thought corporate wouldn't blink an eye. To their surprise, employees milked that opportunity to the maximum extent. Whoever said people don't want to work nowadays? In this case, such people are sorely mistaken. OP worked 42 hours of overtime that month, leading to a big fat salary that he wouldn't have gotten otherwise. As he wasn't the only one, corporate caught on and got involved, as corporations do. Sometimes the best lessons come from giving someone exactly what they wanted. In this case, we have a scheming coworker at a restaurant who denied a server (and their patrons) a specific table because she wanted to save that for herself. As we know, larger groups mean bigger tips, but you can't control every table at a restaurant, especially when it was the customer that specifically requested said table.   Still, the coworker, whom OP refers to as Blondie, was adamant and refused to let go of the table. This is a great example of what not to do if you're trying to be a gracious coworker, but it is how you make enemies in the workplace. As some folks in the comments section pointed out, the internal politics in a restaurant can be wildly unnecessary and cutthroat, but we believe the Redditor was totally justified in her decision to give her coworker exactly what she wanted. What ended up happening was that the coworker was given every large party that came in at the same time. Sure, that means potentially good tips, but it also means a high likelihood of getting overwhelmed. 'You can't order me around anymore': Tenant gets even with property manager after getting elected as board member for housing organization property manager quits

Low-income apartment complexes often have housing organizations that help tenants rent homes cheaper than they would be able to in an open market. This particular housing organization owned 500 units in over 20 complexes in OP's area, and unfortunately, OP's property manager was the last person you'd wish to be responsible for anything. For some reason unbeknownst to OP, this property manager, who, for the sake of this article, we'll call Karen, had it out for OP. Karen made OP's life miserable whenever she could, and on top of it all, was also committing fraud. The apartment complex was illegally towing tenants' cars without giving them proper notice, and this was, of course, thanks to Karen. Eventually, OP got elected onto the board, which meant that technically, OP was now this property manager's boss. OP immediately took action, making sure to email all the juicy details about Karen's behavior and blatant fraud to the director. Tests exist to gauge understanding of a subject but often have the unfortunate effect of influencing the curriculum itself to achieve the best results for that test—even if that's not the best result for the students. Test designers and administrators are (usually) only humans themselves and are not free from the bias of their own perspectives and beliefs.  Intentionally introducing a trick into the test that seeks to catch students out is probably unethical, especially when the test is one that will cause the student to fail immediately. Then not telling them that they failed, having them proceed with the rest of the test, really just seems like you're trying to embarrass the poor tester and abuse the small amount of power you have. That's what this driving instructor did to a teen taking their driving exam for the first time. When the exam began, he sneakily kept his seat belt unfastened for 15 feet or so before the teen asked them to fasten it.  I feel like this isn't a driving skill problem; it's reasonable to expect any sane adult to be responsible for fastening their own seatbelt when they get into the vehicle. Whoever does a full check to make sure their passengers are buckled in? All she wanted to do was go to dinner at a restaurant that specialized in the style of food from the region in China where she grew up. He doesn't like "spicy" food, and she had to beg him to go with her. When the food came, it was too spicy for his liking, he began to make a scene—sending (perfectly good) food back to the kitchen, demanding less spicy dishes. After his wife told him to just eat the rice (since that's the only food his delicate palate could handle), he got up and left in a huff—solidifying his wife's humiliation. The husband turned to the internet to see whether or not he was in the wrong for ruining his wife's birthday, and since his own version of events does little to paint him in a positive light, it's hard to imagine how brutal this scene was to witness in real-time.

There are no winners in the tipping debate, but this dude decided to ask people on the internet if they thought he handled this the right way.  As u/Thatsweatyguy4 wrote in their post to r/AmItheA**hole, they and their little brother found themselves in an awkward situation with the manager of a pizza place. Basically every human being loves pizza, so it makes sense that the brother, an intern who organized a food drive, picked the universally beloved food to serve. They planned to give a pizza lunch to the floor in the office that donated the most money. As the OP writes, on a Monday, their bro called up a pizza joint to enquire about ordering a LOT of pizza — 35 pies, to be exact.  From there, though, it seems like the pizza place gave this guy the runaround. Sir this is what you wanted': Physics teacher gets schooled by students after he demands they plot graph despite not knowing the range of values upfront

When teachers attempt to exert control with no real grounds to do so, things get messy, fast. In this case, a physics teacher demanded his students plot the graph for an experiment as they went along, despite not knowing the range of values upfront. OP, who was a part of the class, realized that even though this teacher had no clue what he was doing, he and the rest of the class would have to comply. The experiment in question included demonstrating the young modulus, where you would expect a straight line, until a point whereby the material yields and strains much further than expected by Hooke's law. So the entire class began plotting the data they had, but they clearly didn't have enough space to accompany the entire experiment and were running out of paper, pretty fast. Companies need to be careful with who they pick when searching for a job candidate to work in a managerial role, as often their choice can make or break a team. In this case, OP was an IT manager for a company that was searching for a successor to run the store in the owner's place. Soon enough, they found a 'worthy candidate', but the candidate in question turned out to be not only terrible at running the show but was also rude and entitled overall as a person.  This resulted in 15 employees quitting their jobs in the first three months that this new manager was working. The company then switched over to cost-cutting mode, so long-time vendors were replaced with friends or family of the new manager, services were downgraded or cut, and payment plans for the sales department were messed with, which further eroded the morale of the workforce. Eventually, OP had enough and decided he was going to quit. After doing so, his manager told him he was no longer a part of the company, and should no longer involve himself in work matters. A few days later, OP received a call from his local internet provider, who told him that his internet service bill had gone unpaid for the last six months, and would get cut off if he didn't pay immediately. OP remembered the last words of his manager, telling him that he was not to interfere in company matters… so OP decided to maliciously comply. This led to a variety of problems for the company. The man's eyes widened considerably, and he immediately demanded to speak to her manager, who would only return the following day. OP explained that he was more than welcome to file a complaint the next day, but he wanted to file a complaint now.
