You certainly cannot please everybody

It was the official "employee crying corner" for me…

Sure, there was definitely enough space on that door for DiCaprio.
But when the actual Titanic sunk, the only effective rescue attempt was staged by the Carpathia, which should have been too far away to help, but they did anyway. This Tumblr story addresses that intriguing human need to do as much as you can in a moment of crisis. It's a decent reminder that not only are we compelled to try as hard as we can to help strangers who truly need our help in an emergency, but also that we'd have a harder time living with ourselves if we knew we didn't try hard enough. Even in the recounting, it's hard not to feel a tinge of humanity restored.
If anything, it's a reminder that Kate Winslet's heart was even colder than, well, Jack's at the end there.
For another intriguingly emotional nautical tumblr tale, here's the thread on the forever on patrol submarines.

If anyone ever tells you that you're repulsive, they're completely right. Your mouth is made out of butthole, you're chock full of bacteria and acid. Your spine wasn't built to stand up straight and you're immune system doesn't know your eyes exist. You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
So don't let anyone tell you that you're not gross. You are, and it's awful. Sure, all of your parts working in concert make up a terrifically capable, interesting and unique human, but you're always gonna be made of some kind of goo. On the bright side, if anyone ever offers to rearrange your guts, let them know that in fact, they do that by themselves. It might not be perfect, but it's at least a bit of a consolation.
Anyways, here's to the inherent horror show of being. Your body may be a haunted house, but at least haunted houses are exciting.

It's not uncommon for employees to secretly get back at their own employers by automating their own job, like this employee who automated their job and got paid to do nothing for 5 years. It's also pretty common for employees to be responsible for doing their bosses job. Combine the two and you get this person. They figured out how to do their boss's job in a fraction of the time. And since this task just happened to be the one thing keeping their boss around, it became pretty reasonable to just let 'em go.
Maybe if their boss played by the rules in the first place, they wouldn't have created a situation where their employee could so easily make their entire position redundant. Even if you're totally ineffectual in your workplace, but people still like you, you're probably gonna stick around. But since they were an active inconvenience, it's not surprising that they got the axe.

A terrible roommate is something that can turn your entire world upside down. There's nothing like coming home from a long day's work only to experience the antagonizing torment of sharing your space with an insane stranger.
This hellscape is all too real in our modern dystopian world, with more adults "doubling up" or sharing living spaces with someone other than their partner than ever before. A study done by Pew Research Center in 2018 showed this trend, and that was pre-COVID times, so you can only imagine that it has gotten much worse.
This guy showed his coworker this letter that his insane roommate had sent their landlord. The coworker has now shared it with us so that we can all bask in its deranged brilliance.
It's funny to view this kind of thing from a distance but living with this person would be all too close for comfort.

This wife has finally reached her wit's end with her husband's relationship with his close friend Carl. The two are inseparable, and her husband even describes Carl as his "nicotine," He just can't quit "it." It hit its breaking point when her husband invited Carl to come along with them on their planned couple's getaway. Her husband thought it would be no problem if they crammed Carl into their two-person room with only one bed. The shock of her life came when she found out her husband planned to share the bed with Carl and have her sleep on the floor. Now, who's the third wheel here? It doesn't seem like it's Carl.
Of course, the internet is naturally suspicious, and just about every single comment is alluding to the fact that Carl and her husband seem to be a little bit closer than just friends. There are multiple references to "Grace and Frankie," which, for the uninformed, is a show that's premise centers on almost precisely this scenario.
What do you think? Is she in the wrong for excusing herself from the situation? Should she excuse herself from the situation altogether and file for divorce? Let us know in the comments.

Who could have guessed that in a few short decades, video games would become a billion dollar industry, captivating the minds and afternoons of countless people, attracting innovators and artists of all types to tell stories in a way that had never been done before. We could have. We totally guessed it years ago. Playing Mario Kart on N64, our parents were like "good thing they'll grow out of this complete waste of time." Little did they know that we were all planning to do this for the rest of our lives.
It's not like people spent their time on terrifically worthwhile pursuits anyway. Oh, did your dad used to go fishing or whatever? Well there's tons of video games that do that. And in most of them, it's just a mini-game. Now, if you want, you can go fishing and steal a car in the same game. Video games are freakin' sweet.
Here are some more gaming memes for the highly leveled.

Across pretty much every industry, if the people who do a particular job tell you that something isn't going to work, it's most likely in your best interest to listen to them. This was the case with a new boss who insisted on using a terrifically inefficient GPS system, then actively punished employees who wouldn't use it. So what happens when management insists on work being inefficient? Well, things get more inefficient of course. It's one of those screw ups that almost solves itself.
Evidently this guy was even worse than they thought, having gotten fired later not just for incompetence, but corruption. How the hell do these kinds of people keep being put in charge of employees? All of the wrong people are lying to get jobs.
For another graceful episode of work correcting itself, here's the employee who pushed their stinky cart though their workplace until the elevator was fixed.

These are the pettiest reasons that would cause someone to refuse to date a potential match, even if everything else about that person would otherwise be desirable. These ordinarily trifling traits, attributes, and mannerisms are an earth-shattering deal-breaker for these people.
I'd have to say that I think that the person who said that they couldn't handle loud open-mouthed chewing is the wisest here. I don't even think that's petty, but maybe that's because I can relate to it so well. I would add nail-biting and any mannerisms that involve any variety of teeth or mouth noises to that category too. I can not be in the same room with any noises involving teeth, which makes me a brilliant guest at dinner parties. The sound of teeth being brushed makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and I'm convinced it is the most brain-crushing noise on the planet. My partner, bless her, somehow manages to be the loudest chewer in existence. She's a real-life version of that episode from How I Met Your Mother where, no matter what Lilly eats, it makes a deafening noise. Eerily, the two look quite similar too. Are all small women loud chewers?
Somehow, this petty deal-breaker of mine failed to do its job… and now I'm eternally listening to a garbage disposal every time I eat my dinner.
I will say that it's worth it though.

As people, we spend a lot of our time concerning ourselves with problems. And that's generally a good thing. By focusing on our own problems, we can motivate ourselves to solve those problems and move towards having more pleasant and fulfilling lives. But the issue with only focusing on problems all the time is that the world seems like it's composed entirely of unending chaos. That's why we need to actually take note of when we find solutions, and give ourselves some credit for finding them. If you don't do that, you're just gonna be miserable, and you're gonna make everyone around you miserable. So... don't do that?
So to help remind yourself that there are more people than you think who are doing their best, and finding ways to deal with this big thing called life, here are some wholesome moments to exercise the feels. And if that's not enough, here are even more wholesome moments to tap into the feels.

Having a bad neighbor is a nightmare. When dealing with a real piece of work in the wild, at least you can just walk away and never see them again. But if you share a property line with an inconsolable sack of garbage, it's a lot harder to ignore someone else's miserable life. In this case, this person's neighbor had a habit of eavesdropping on their conversations. So naturally, they started a recurring lie/joke about all the wine they were making from her overhanging mulberry tree.
Taking these words as complete fact, this neighbor became consumed by hatred over the purported "successful wine business" and decided to take things into her own hands. She really thought she was getting the upper hand when she cut her own tree down. But hey, let people live their truth. Even if it is terrifically stupid, and built on lies.
For some more neighbor trouble, here's the insolent neighbor who got their car towed after repeatedly blocking a driveway.

Sure, everyone has varying standards of decency, and you should be allowed to do what you want in the privacy of your own home. But insisting that your Mother-In-Law look at your naked body doesn't exactly make you a perfectly reasonable host. We all have to make small concessions when we have someone visiting, and this person has some very peculiar ideas on how big a concession "wearing a swim suit for a bit" actually is. Particularly when it comes to her defense. "I need to be naked for my mental health, and if guests can't handle it they can screw" might not be the rhetorical slam dunk she think she's making.
Especially considering the fact that a lot of people would kill to have a Mother in Law that isn't chomping at the bit to invade your personal space and life, like when this woman noped out of a husband/wife trip after her husband secretly booked his mom to come with.

Life seems to simple when you're in high school. The man is always on your back, but you know the truth. You're gonna do things differently. If only people understood how unique and complex your emotions are. "No one can tell me what to do, I'm going to be a force for good in the world." And then 20 years later you wake up early so you can get your good boots on, because it's your time to shine at the lead poisoning factory.
"Maybe we should make something other than lead poisoning," you think to yourself, removing the needle from an apple before slapping an "organic" sticker over the hole.
"Quit being an idealist," says your coworker, before pursing his lips to blow lead shavings into a pile of Spiderman underwear.
Maybe it's not what you wanted to do, but at the end of the day you have to admit that at least it's less evil than working for a bank.

It's easy enough to be confused. If that's all it took to amuse us, people would just sit in organic chemistry lectures and laugh their assess off.
But the amusement of confusion is a little more complicated than just looking at a lot of Os, Cs, and Hs and being told you'll never amount to anything. No, there are certain aesthetics to the right type of fun confusion. It can still be frustrating investigating an image of what looks like a dog with a human face, but at least after a few seconds of thinking, the mystery is solved. There's nothing quite like that "eureka" moment of realizing that you are in fact, not looking at a butt. And in that sense, we can each be our own Sherlock Holmes. But, like, for butts.
Anyway for another does of terrific confusion, here are some more confusing images of amusing double-takery.

A wife arrived at her husband's workplace unannounced, fuming over the fact that he wasn't answering his phone while he was in a work meeting. She berated and argued with him to the point where security had to come and remove her from the building, forbidding her to ever return. Her husband notes that she is a 'hothead' but readers think that it's much, much worse than that.
Yikes. Yeah, it's time to get as far away as possible from this relationship.
This thread was posted to r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) by the husband, Redditor u/throwra37736. He posted the topic to the popular subreddit to see if he was in the wrong for not sticking up for his wife when she was removed from the building. His wife certainly thinks that he is in the wrong for, when he returned home, she was fuming over the fact that he didn't do anything when she was being 'mistreated.'
Commenter's responses were exactly the same as what you're probably thinking right now and they encouraged him to divorce her and get as far away from her as he could.

This guy's dad passed away, leaving his sister and him the house. While he was doing some yard work, he found that the older lady living next door wanted to make this complete non-problem her problem. Despite his attempts to explain why he's there, she would not be convinced. So she settled on recording him with her phone. It's probably hard to get into the groove of weeding when an old lady is recording your every move in an attempt to "catch you." OP came up with a pretty novel way to stop this nosey old lady from being a creepy weirdo, and the internet approves of his method.
But seriously, what does she think is going on here? That a burglar has come a few days in a row in order to steal a bunch of lawn clippings? How much does ill-gotten mulch sell for on the black market these days?

A developer and their team were either incompetent or were willfully so when it came to completing their tasks for a project lead. When she stopped picking up the pieces for them, suddenly the project was revealed to be exactly that: pieces.
I'm pretty sure but not entirely positive that there's some kind of programming happening here. Still, I'm less sure that whatever it is that they're doing constitutes the title of 'developer.' If someone could please let me know what these people are even doing for a job, that would be excellent; there's so much jargon in this post that my head is spinning after reading it.
This thread was posted to r/MaliciousCompliance by u/CreedenceFearwater who tells the story of their malicious compliance when told to take a vacation by the team's manager.

There's no better sign of a great manager than inspiring loyalty in their subordinates. Bonus points if you can achieve this while smashing targets. It reminds me of this quote from somewhere that I can't quite place… But I'm certain that it's from some sort of literary masterpiece…
"The truest victory my son… is stirring the hearts of your people." -Terenas Menethil II.
Well, this manager managed to do both the things listed above. She smashed targets and turned around stores, but when push came to shove, and she was pushed out over some petty political bulls#*t, her workers realized that they knew where their loyalties lay.
This thread was posted to Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit, a subreddit where workers share stories about their exploitative work environments. It was originally posted by the manager's husband, Redditor u/PladBaer, but the manager herself joined to give a first-hand account of the incident under the account u/kiindraka.

OP here is in a bit of a bind, having had more children that she seems to reasonably be able to take care of on her own. Instead of asking the kids' dad for help, she went to her 16-year-old step daughter, asking if she could wake up early, make breakfast, and get her children ready for the day. Being a fellow child who also has to go to school, she very reasonably declined. They're not her kids, and she's technically one of them. But OP doesn't want to take no for an answer.
The internet was pretty adamant about the fact that this mom should have probably had the forethought to not put herself in the situation where she needs the help of her husband's kid just to wrangle all of her children, and went on to press as to why she didn't just ask the kids actual father.

You can't 'Karen' your way into a job…

It's sort of important to have a boss who knows how your job actually works. Otherwise, they continually demand that you do unreasonable things, make the work itself worse, and end up making everyone at the company look like a stupid jackass. You know, sort of important.
This person's boss in particular didn't know how paint dried. A manager in charge of a team that paints murals didn't know, or wasn't willing to accept that you can't paint in the rain. This seems like a no-brainer for anyone who is worked with or even seen paint before, but manglement wasn't going to let the laws of physical reality get in the way of a completed project.
As it turned out, this was the last straw in a whole bundle of screw ups that led the whole team to realize that they'd be better off somewhere else. It's just too bad this manager won't have to be forced to include on his resume "doesn't know how paint works, made a whole team quit."
For another wild one, here's theemployee who got fired on a technicality so they took their property and left the business nonfunctional.

Of all the things that make an insult effective, the most salient quality would probably be blazing accuracy. Anyone can say that they screwed your mom, but not everyone can articulate exactly how you look like a sock puppet that just found out it has a hand inside it.
And, this being the internet, every little thing has a the potential to be critiqued, commented on, revisited, taken out of context, and ridiculed. And that's kind of beautiful. It's terrifying if you ever want to actually put your face anywhere, or express your opinion. But all in all it's pretty likely that you have bad opinions and a worse face.
Here are times random people on the internet decided to be veritable astronauts of criticism and make great leaps into the territory of previously unheard, new, and rare insults. And for more utterly specific insults, here are rare insults that left people uniquely destroyed.

Not sure what it says about us as people, but we all spend an inordinate amount of time and energy making sure other people don't know how we actually feel about them. Does this make us good people or bad people? Because we're trying to keep people from feeling bad, but at the same time, we ourselves are the potential cause of that badness. Maybe the word isn't exactly "good" or "bad" but "polite." We try to be "polite" to each other by keeping our frequently insulting thoughts to ourselves.
Don't let technology be the stopgap between your horrible thoughts about a person, and that person themselves. Because human error is a thing, and we're all bound to screw up sometime. And that's how you end up accidentally calling your grandma a "feckless, dried up old hag with the mind of roadkill" on a zoom call. It's not a great look.

This teacher gave their first-grade class a bunch of magnets and told them to run around sticking them to things. Being first graders, they were more than happy to oblige such a request. But, when you invite chaos with young children around, something is bound to get broken.
Now the teacher claims that their phone broke when one of the first graders stuck a magnet to it, and they want the parents to pay. The thing is… They might have made this whole thing up. If strangers on the internet are to believe that is.
This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) subreddit by the concerned parent, u/Conscious_Koala_7009, who is wondering if they are in the wrong for refusing to reimburse the teacher for their "damaged" phone.
This thread is interesting for several reasons. First, it proves an exception to the "take accountability when you damage other people's things" rule of social etiquette, often an important decision-maker on AITA. Because this Teacher invited literal children to do what they did and then proved incapable of protecting their personal belongings from the said thing they told the children to do.
Second, according to commenters, a magnet can't damage a modern smartphone. Now, I'm of little-to-no help here; I've kept magnets away from my electronics like the plague since the mid-'90s. But, I have done the quick Google search (can magnets damage smartphones?) that the commenters have, and the answer appears to be resoundingly unanimous. No, a magnet can't damage anything on a modern smartphone, except for maybe its compass.
Third… (Ok, I know several isn't three, but we're tagging an extra one on here anyways.) As commenters have also mentioned… Don't schools have rules about this kind of thing?

This story takes you way back to the days of the video rental store. Filled to the ceiling with hundreds of VCR tapes, those places always had the musky scent of frequently-handled greasy plastic cases, dust, and old cigarette smoke, embedded in the bright-patterned carpet since the 80s.
Before mail-in subscription services like Netflix killed them off, they were a haven. What kid didn't love a trip to the video store? It was such a buzz to run around looking at the endless number of fascinating cases of movies you would never watch. When the 2000s rolled around, we used to look at the cases for console video games too. Even though we didn't own any of the consoles, it was just a way to know what was out there and going on.
This thread was posted to the r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit and was shared by Redditor u/Lifeaccordingtome83 who recounted this tale of their malicious compliance from times past.
Scroll on for some screenshots of their story and Redditor's reactions below.

The world is far too figurative. People always ask us stuff like "how's it going" but they never actually want to know how it's going. And if you give them the truth, "actually things aren't too great, my doctor told me I have a month to live, because he is trying to hunt down and kill me" it just freaks people out. So in our lives, we have to settle for an assumed set of meanings rather than making them ourselves. And that's dumb.
We'd much rather live in a world of terrifying ambiguity when it comes to social conventions. Someone coming in for a high five? Grab that bad boy and give it a shake. Don't like the soup you ordered? Pour that hot soup into a water balloon and throw it back into the kitchen like a grenade. Now we're really living our best lives. And all it takes is a baked-in misinterpretation of the facts.
Here are some more highly literal moments of technical accuracy.

This daughter was confused when her mother and step-father were suddenly able to purchase a new house. They had been barely able to get by previously and now were suddenly living quite well. When questioned about it, her mother revealed that they had used some of the money that the daughter's father, who had tragically passed away, had left for her. This inheritance was left under explicit instruction that it went to his daughter when she turned eighteen. So have these parents effectively stolen from their child?
This thread was posted to r/AITA (Am I the Asshole) by the daughter, u/reddit_randouser, who is wondering if they were in the wrong for calling their mother and stepfather out in front of the stepfather's family. Her parent and stepparent are furious with her and think she's an insubordinate teen who needs to apologize.
We think it's pretty simple: They're just mad that they got called out.
Commenters have agreed wholeheartedly and have condemned the actions of the mother and stepfather.

The 13th reason why not to have kids…
