There is nothing more stressful and complex than a friendship breakup. Sometimes, it's easier to see that you need a divorce than it is to realize you need to cut off a friend. That's because people's definitions of friendship and what it means to be a good friend can vary. There are folks who believe in 100% uninhibited loyalty, there are folks who believe in full transparency even when it's unproductive, and there are folks who simply don't know how to match the amount of effort that the other person is putting into the friendship.

Ideally, it's a natural drifting apart, where two people come to a mutual understanding that their presences are no longer serving one another. For the non-confrontational types like myself, this is the ideal situation. However, we all know that the "natural drifting apart" phenomenon is a rare one. More often than not, the reason why the friendship needs to end is because of a lack of mutual understanding. Confrontation, though horrible to experience, is inevitable in the majority of these scenarios.
