Not only is approaching your boss and asking for a raise legitimate, but it is also inevitable, especially when you find yourself doing many more tasks than your original job description entailed. Unfortunately for OP, they were denied a $1 raise from their boss, even though they were working two job descriptions instead of one. OP had no choice but to look for another job in addition to the one they were already doing.
Lo and behold, OP's company was more than willing to pay that extra dollar, plus four more… just not to OP. Apparently, the company had posted a job listing for OP's position, where they offered five dollars more than OP was making. In other words, OP earned $15 an hour, but the job listing said the company was willing to pay $20. After being denied a one-dollar raise, OP was livid.
Not only is it unacceptable on OP's boss's part to fail to notify OP they were getting fired, but it was even more infuriating because of the amount they were willing to pay somebody else for OP's job after OP asked for a one dollar raise.

For more, here is a feisty Karen who called up a newspaper, demanding they take her name out of an article that was published where her name was mentioned in passing. To make matters worse, she was actually a public figure, and obviously had a thin grasp of the law.
