At the end of the day, almost all of us are just trying to get where we're going and mind our own business. Anyone's daily goals should include minimal intervention from furious weirdos on the street. Live in a larger city long enough and it becomes second nature to not draw attention to yourself, because for the most part, not too many people look back fondly on fights they've had with strangers.
You can never be too sure what's going through another person's mind, and it can be really easy to make yourself look like a target, so living by the mantra of "I didn't see anything, I'll be on my way now" is a great way to not find yourself being punched in the face on the bus because you didn't want to let a screaming man borrow your phone.
