If you're not paying rent, you forfeit your right to an opinion. It's as simple as that. It doesn't matter how often this roommate has his girlfriend over (apparently, she's at their place like 18 hours a day). It doesn't matter how serious the relationship is. Until she's on the lease and paying her share of the rent, she doesn't get to dictate what the rules are.

 

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole subreddit by u/Forward_Society_2253, who shared that his cooking has become an issue for his roommate's girlfriend. After refusing to give in to her demands, the Redditor started to question his decision-making when his coworkers said he was being a jerk. Our take? NOPE! The coworkers were acting like jerks. The roommate was acting like a jerk. And most importantly, the roommate's girlfriend was acting like the biggest jerk. It sounds like the lease is up soon anyway, so my advice would be to cook the smelliest dishes in the time you have left.

When the CEO of this IT company demanded changes to his email system, he totally miscalculated the consequences. U/dingdongdelongwong shared this story of malicious compliance, which was all brought on because of this bigwig's inane ideas. 

The OP shared that they were tasked with helping the CEO, "Mr. Bigwig," set up an auto reply feature on his email while he went on a vacation. The CEO seemed to not understand why he couldn't send someone an out of office email every single time they emailed him. Apparently he just wanted limitless reminders of how much fun he was having on holiday while his employees continued on with their workweeks. This smug CEO thought he knew exactly what he was doing, but he didn't expect the OP to comply with his demands specifically as he said.

'My mom says that it was a mistake': Entitled Mom tries to cheat daughter out of her father's inheritance

There's nothing like money and inheritance to drive a wedge between family members. There is a wide range of potential reasons why this woman's late father did not include her younger sister as part of the inheritance: perhaps he drafted the will before she was born or came of age, or perhaps she has a history of being irresponsible with money, or perhaps she even was included and this is all a lie concocted by the greedy mother. Who's to say?

 

One thing we do know for sure, however, is that this woman is entitled to her fair share of the money. There is no world in which signing that money over to her mother is the responsible solution here, no matter how much of a nightmare her mother is. I'm all for adaptive experiences for people with disabilities… but when your only disability is that you're an absolute moron, it's kind of hard to accommodate you. There's no shortage of entitled idiots in this world who are eager to blame everything, no—anything else for their problems. Unfortunately, we're stuck on this planet with them, and all we can do is bury our faces in our hands and sigh.

Enter: this guy. The guy who didn't know that he'd need to know how to swim to partake in a snorkeling tour. The most hilarious part of this entire thing is that he specifically addresses the fact that he was annoyed the guide wouldn't "aid" him—what did he think the guide would do? Operate his arms and legs for him? Possess his body and operate him like a puppet, like some sort of swim-lesson demon? Sorry buddy, the "possession" package costs extra—you should have read the fine print. Plus, you must allow enough time at the end of the tour for the end-of-session exorcism.

Micromanagers are suffocating bosses who don't trust you to get the job done and certainly don't trust you to get it done right. This one in particular, 'Sally', was working in a company that was known for its nepotism. The upper-tier management was made up of family members and close friends. The woman who posted the story about micromanagement that led to malicious compliance shared the tale on Reddit — where she gained a lot of sound advice actually.

See, this micromanager ordered the employees to attend a mandatory weekly meeting — unpaid. Which is illegal. So not only was this manager annoyingly bad at her job, but she was also incredibly entitled and delusional. Now, on to the dress code — the company had no written code of conduct. But Sally decided that from then on, the employees must 'dress for the job they want, not the job they have'. 

Which is utterly ridiculous. You're basically admitting that the job they have is terrible. That doesn't exactly encourage them to want to stay there or put in any effort, Sally. This principal should have known better than to test the patience of this school teacher! Public school teachers already have so much on their plates, but this teacher's situation sounds especially grim. 

As u/Middle_Pound_822 shared to r/MaliciousCompliance, their school is currently plagued by an "overwhelming sewage smell." It's so bad that lots of the teachers have moved their classrooms into the hallway. That resulted in the ire of the school supervisor, who responded with a petty email (and no solutions for the issue of the sewage stench). The whole scenario is nightmarish, and as many commenters pointed out, it could be a serious health concern for everyone in the building.

That being said, there are those who have come to the end of their romantic relationship who somehow manage to make things work and still be friends. Surprising, I know, but it gives me hope that some people do have the capability to be decent and rational.

Well, this guy, Redditor u/Nerd_Law, is continuing to be haunted by his ex-wife, from who he split eight years ago. Not over children or hard feelings… but certainly over her finances. He keeps receiving phone calls from a debt collection agency that is trying to reach his ex-wife to recover her debts. These companies infamously have no boundaries and will call your best friend from first grade if it means that they have a shot of hitting a payday. He was absolutely fed up with this situation and decided that a little revenge was in order to balance the scales.

In case you haven't noticed, fandoms have gotten a little out of control these days, and it's starting to affect relationships. He either had a serious crush on Chris, or he has a tendency to self-sabotage. He made it his mission to make sure he would not be accepted to the job by repeatedly asking when 'Chris' was going to interview him. If you're looking for a sign, this is it. Is your boss treating you as if you're easily disposable, adding additional work duties that are not technically a part of your job description? Maybe it's time you look for a place where you'll be appreciated — where you won't be taken for granted, a place that will properly compensate you for the amount of work you do.

In an earlier post, you'll find I wrote about a tired employee, working on an understaffed team at a restaurant, who shared his 'horrible boss' experience with Reddit. This boss instructed him to do things that weren't a part of his job description. We've all been there... they're the worst. Furthermore, he told u/Dio_bean (the worker) to go and do a 'deep clean', so this employee did what anyone else would — he maliciously complied. You can check out the full story here.

'What do I do if they aren't home?': Landlord gives handyman unclear instructions when tenants won't answer the door, cue malicious compliance!

When the instructions are unclear, horrible bosses and managers have no one to blame but themselves. That's one of the main takeaways from this situation (the other one being that landlords are still the absolute worst!). 

 

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by u/fluid_reference, a friend of the handyman at the center of the story. He had just started working for this landlord and was receiving a tutorial on doing heat readings in apartments. When he asked his boss what to do if the tenant doesn't answer or open the door, the landlord laughed and shrugged off the question. Well, what does one do after receiving unclear instructions? This guy figured it was worth it to wait and get paid overtime during that period. The best part of the story is that when the landlord tried to fire the handyman as a result of his "clever shenanigans," the union sided with the handyman. Turns out this malicious compliance paid off (literally)!

If you don't believe in karma, you've got another thing coming… You can't just jump jobs burning bridges every time because those people you left in your chaos will come back to haunt you. Blue collar workers in trade know that has a GD fact. Recently, a construction worker took to Reddit to share their own satisfying story where they got to serve their very own piping hot plate of karma to a toxic ex-coworker. 

So this guy worked at a construction company and was fine until they brought one of the owner's entitled nephew's onboard. This guy seemed to be a text book jerk. Short tempered, blame everyone else for everything, and was just an all around unpleasant guy. Not to mention is seems like he was always trying his darnedest to get other people in trouble with the company. This eventually got the Reddit poster fired. 

Fortunately, the Reddit went to their competitors and quickly got a better job there. About a year later his boss comes up to him and asks him about an application he was looking into. It would seem someone he used to work with was now applying there. He looked at the application and low and behold it was his a-hole ex-coworker. Turns out his epic jerkness ended up getting him fired by his own uncle.

Now, karma was at the tip of his fingers and all he had to do was press the button. He didn't hesitate to tell his now-boss exactly what he thought about this applicant and every reason why he should definitely not be hired.

This HR department just wouldn't listen to their employees. U/bolshe-viks-vaporub shared this story of malicious compliance against their own employer. As the OP writes, their company got traded to a DoD contracting company, leading to changes in company policy. For the OP, a hard worker who often worked way more than 40 hours per week, things just weren't adding up. They tried repeatedly to contact the company's HR department about the mistake, but were continually ignored. Finally, they decided to comply with the rules, which this company was definitely not counting on! 

Commenters noted how odd the discussion around sick days is, and how companies can be stingy with them in the US. Others applauded the OP for their courage to take this all the way to the top to ensure the company really had to comply. 

Next, these entitled women demanded some seats in a cafe with communal seating — so the OP decided to make the women wait their turn.

They took their sweet time eating this meal — wish we could see the looks on those women's faces when they realized the OP meant business.

‘You Say the Attendance System Is Law? Fine, I’ll Use It to My Advantage’ : Fed up Employee Plays Work System via Malicious Compliance, Following Bossy Manager’s Unfair Formal Rebuke

A boss with an imperious attitude… what else is new? If you've ever been reprimanded unfairly by upper management, join the club. To think we're all humans at the end of the day who have their own issues, go to the bathroom and cringe at the lack of toilet paper, drink one too many beers, cry over an ex… it's crazy how authority can make you forget all that, leading to unjust actions toward an employee. 

This employee in particular was a model worker — so he was a little more than surprised when his manager called him into her office for an earful. She was concerned about the extra 15 minutes that were missing from his shift a week earlier, accusing him of taking more time during one of his breaks. I'm already groaning, but I'll carry on nonetheless: He was adamant that he had not in fact, taken more time than usual (save for perhaps one minute, but who's counting?). 

She wasn't having any of that, so he took it upon himself to investigate the matter for himself. He found out that the punch system wasn't rounding the amount of time he worked while on break, but rather the time at which he punched. Ex-Girlfriend Keeps Showing Up at Apartment Every Night, Roommate Lets Her In Causing Major Fight

This one had people totally split in the comments as to who was in the right. On the one hand, the ex clearly has a borderline stalker problem and it was getting to the point that perhaps the best move was to call the police. Or perhaps the best move for the Redditor was to let the ex sulk outside the apartment and wait to get advice from their roommate. However, on the other hand, the Redditor's care for the ex's safety is certainly something to consider. But at the end of the day, it might not have been their place to do anything at all. 

 

After u/VastCelery6379 posted this thread to Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole subreddit, it became clear that this was one giant sticky situation and the right thing wasn't necessarily obvious. Our take on this scenario was that the Redditor was right to be concerned about the ex's safety and was right to call them an Uber. However, they should have notified them through the door that the Uber was coming or waited with them outside. They should not have let them into the apartment, considering that sort of gives the ex permission to do something like this again. Share what you think was the best way to handle this one. 'Don’t fall into the middle manager trap like I did': Senior Employee Trained for Specific Promotion Gets Burned by Company When They Hire Inexperienced Nepo-Baby Instead

Working your way up in a company usually means ending up in a middle management position at least for a good little while. Starting from the bottom of the pyramid means you have a longer way to work up, but it isn't impossible. So you work hard and harder until it would be absolutely bonkers for you not to make your way to the top of the pyramid. However, some people skip some steps in a very unfair way because of nepotism. 

If you don't know what nepotism is, it's basically when people get hire or promoted not because they are good employees but because they are related in some way. It's whack. This is exactly what happened to one employee who recently took to Reddit to express his frustrations. The guy had been working at the company for several years now. He worked his hardest and was sure he would get the promotion he deserved. It seemed obvious to him and all his coworkers. However, when the position became available, the higher ups went around his back and hired a different person. 

He thought maybe they hired someone who just simply was better for the job, which he could accept. However, he found out that the person who stole his promotion was just a nepo-baby from a family with money who has political pull in the company. The new manager is extremely inexperienced and has no idea what he is doing and the employee who worked hard for years is rightful upset.

A group of grad students decided to move in together, but their tight schedules are causing a major rift in their friendship. U/Chocolate-Lab2520 posted to r/AmItheA****** to ask an odd question: "AITA for showering when my roommate was going to?"

The OP explained that she lives with two of her friends, who just moved in about two weeks ago. Aside from paying for groceries every now and again, these two friends, "Marie" and "Cassidy" don't pay rent. Since these women are busy with school, they planned assigned times to do certain things, like laundry or showering. When the OP decided to shower outside of her assigned showering time, the roommates reacted strongly, and the OP asked the subreddit what she should do. 

After people in the comments basically called the OP a pushover, she took action! She updated the post to say that she's going to ask her roommates to pay rent or GTFO within a month. We love to see positive personal growth! These roommates are going to facepalm hard after they realize what this shower fight has resulted in. 

Next, this worker shared this outrageous sign from their work – the bosses want their employees to always be available to work! 

'They need to leave': Pregnant wife returns from hospital to find her brother-in-law's entire family living in their home

This must be the plot of either a screwball comedy or a total horror nightmare! This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole subreddit by u/Even-String-3530, who shared that after an unfortunate stay at the hospital, while four months pregnant, she returned home to find her house in shambles.

 

Ok not literally, but pretty close. Her husband invited his brother's entire family to live with them after they were evicted for some mysterious reason (red flag #1 right there!). It took very little time for them to completely turn their home upside down, with dirty dishes and clothes strewn about everywhere. After a few days, the Redditor couldn't take it anymore and called her Mom to help. Let's just say that Mother knew best and swooped in to save the day. Even the Redditor's mother-in-law, who was initially unhappy with the way her sons were treated, sided with the Redditor once she saw the state of the home.

'Stop being upset at every little tiny thing and bothering managers': Delivery driver's pro revenge results in heavy fine for restaurant

This delivery driver was completely fed up with being put in her place by restaurant staff, so she decided to make a few phone calls to get revenge. 

Food delivery is a tough job, according to u/dadsabrat, who shared her story on r/ProRevenge. And it's made even more difficult by the whims of restaurant staff and managers, who the OP claims treat her and other drivers disrespectfully. There's not much they can do about it normally, but on this particular day, there was actually a safety concern worth reporting to the heavy hitter of workplace safety: OSHA.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was not happy to hear that this restaurant was ignoring important safety rules. Commenters noted that OSHA is not to be trifled with, since they can hand out hefty fines. If anything, this restaurant got off easy, since fines can range into the 5 figures! This delivery driver got to prove herself to this restaurant, and it's some sweet revenge for all of us to read.

'No one tricked you. You screwed up': Guy takes girlfriend's Porsche out for a spin without her permission and won't pay for the damage

This dude literally drove his girlfriend's Porsche into a field against her wishes and is confused as to why she's mad. He shared his story via this thread on Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole subreddit and has proven once again that the best part of reading AITA stories is when there's a slight admission of guilt buried underneath euphemisms. Everyone wants to paint themselves as the innocent victim in situations like these, but every so often, it's blatantly obvious that the Redditor is at fault - no matter how hard they try to sugarcoat things. 

 

In this instance, it became quite clear that the Redditor's girlfriend only wanted him to use her Toyota Camry for errands. Even later on, the original poster edited his story to add that he was pressured by a friend to take the Porsche out for a spin. What, are we teenagers succumbing to peer pressure here? Seems like this guy has a habit of blaming everyone for his problems but himself. Pay up for those damages, sir! You've earned it.

'I'm not really sure if that's a reasonable request to make': New vegan DND player demands the world be 'cruelty free,' dividing players

As the dungeon master of a longstanding Dungeons & Dragons campaign, this person isn't sure how to respond after receiving a startling request from a brand new player. Using a throwaway account, u/EmotionalMacaroon169 wrote to the r/DND subreddit asking for some advice. The internet doesn't always provide the nuance needed in these scenarios, but people in the comments seemingly understood both sides of the issue. 

Is this vegan player wrong for demanding a universe that suits her needs at the expense of the other players? The OP was totally unsure what to do. Many commenters suggested the OP tell the new player that she isn't the right fit for their campaign. She'd probably be much more comfortable in a group that aligns with her values. But even then, others noted that the whole purpose of the game involves imaginary violence so… how does she square that with her vegan beliefs? It's quite the conundrum. 

Let's hope the OP updates us — I bet they can find the vegan DND player a new campaign to try, while also salvaging their years-long campaign with their friends. It's often said that when going for a job interview, you should be kind and courteous to everyone you meet; famous anecdotes about not holding the front door to the building open for the person who ended up being the hiring manager reinforce this idea. Why, then, don't we extrapolate this idea and apply it to our daily lives—both professional and personal? When one lives their life in this way, they negate the chance of saying the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time, like this sorry idiot who thought that they would get away with being rude and demanding towards a tech support worker, only to learn the hard way that the tech support worker was on a first name basis with their boss.

You might hope that this type of lesson would encourage someone to change their ways, but chances are they've found a way to rationalize the entire event so that it wasn't their fault and have learned nothing as a result.

Sometimes, you're actively seeking revenge on your ex, but other times, the perfect recipe for revenge just falls right into your lap. You might not have been planning anything per se, but how could you not pursue it when the opportunity is right there? 

 

That's what happened to u/OddFiction, who posted this thread on Reddit's r/pettyrevenge subreddit. She had just broken up with her very problematic ex after discovering he was cheating on her with a married coworker. However, he didn't know this was the reason, so sometime later when he and his coworker decided to exercise at the gym where the Redditor works, she found the perfect opportunity to get her revenge. See, gym members sign a waiver allowing to have photos taken of them for social media purposes. So you can guess what the Redditor did next.

Woman Steals Roommate's Cat, Wonders if He's Wrong

Reddit's AITA subreddit often presents us with complicated social situations where different considerations and ethical reasoning could make the decision go in either direction. This is not one of those times.

This woman saw fit to make off with his roommate's cat, citing the roommate's lack of attentiveness to the pet as her justification and reason. The internet has swiftly condemned her actions, calling her a thief and kidnapper and declaring her actions completely unjustified.

The woman writes that her roommate, Karl, "Wasn't the greatest of owners," mentioning that "While he did take care of the cat's food, water and litterbox, he ignored her existence almost entirely." She then goes on to explain how she bonded with the cat and began to resent its owner for keeping it inside all the time, taking that cat on outdoor adventures. 

Once moving out, the woman returned with a key that she had inexplicably kept and staged the apartment to make it look like the cat had run away, taking it for her own. It was only when a friend pointed out that perhaps this wasn't the most ethical thing to do that the user turned to Reddit's r/AmItheA**hole subreddit to see if she was in the wrong.

Readers were shocked; they quickly and almost unanimously declared the woman to be the "a-hole."

What in the world were they thinking when they designed this stuff? With all the technology available to us, you'd think that there would be no more badly designed items. And yet here are a bunch of pieces of furniture, signs, and even one tragic balcony, which are all designed to function poorly. 

The person who has the "tombstone" advertisement has my sympathies, although I don't understand how no one told them what it looked like before they posted it! Also, I'm curious who else absolutely loves that odd chair that looks like it would be a literal pain in the a** to sit in! Terrible design, maybe, but beauty is pain, darling.
