Mild Vandalism That Made The World A Much More Interesting Place

We can't exactly tell people to go out and write clever and stupid things on signs, but it does just kind of have a way of happening. It's inevitable, like gravity. These vandals slip in and out of the night, unseen by the public. They're seekers of their own kind of justice. Like batman, but with a sharpie instead of billions of dollars worth of assets to spend on crime-fighting.

It's hard to look at the words "public canal zone" without thinking about the terrifically fine ways one could simply scratch out a few letters and turn a regular sign into some magic. And sometimes one or two small changes, a post-it, or a well placed googly eye is all it takes. We're bored of walking around life and not seeing jokes on stuff, so the more quips get sprinkled into our dull, useless lives the better.

For the sign-hungry, here are some funny signs from this weird world.

Bad Brother Reprimands Sister For Breastfeeding at His Wedding, Internet Roasts Him Alive

A brother reprimanded his sister for breastfeeding her newborn at his wedding, an action that has drawn the ire of his mother and new bride.

This story was posted to Reddit's r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) subreddit by the brother, Reddit user u/Swimming-Exchange448. He posted the thread to see if he was in the wrong for "calling out" his sister during his wedding for breastfeeding without removing herself from the room. He was admonished by his new wife and mother for his actions.

Redditors generally have a pretty strong stance when it comes to breastfeeding: It's a natural and important thing that one need not be ashamed of. They generally don't take too kindly to those who would seek to shame or remove breastfeeding women from social situations.

Hopefully, the Redditor who posted the thread can approach this feedback with an open mind and learn and grow from the experience. Maybe next time he will listen to his new wife and mother's feedback and not resort to taking lessons from the internet.

There's no shortage of family drama surrounding weddings on the internet. Take this recent story of a half-sister who insisted on wearing a wedding dress to her sister's engagement party.

Tumblr Thread Takes on the Scam That is Calling Lab Gems "Fake"

If you've shopped for the jewelry you probably know just how much of an elaborate scam everything involved with it is. Diamonds are almost like some kind of cryptocurrency as every bit of value we put into them is completely manufactured. Jewelry companies control the flow of diamonds into the market and keep the flow as low as possible in order to create a false scarcity, giving the illusion that these jewels are rare and valuable. In reality, there are warehouses of the damn things out there somewhere just sitting there.

This scam has evolved further, with the rise of technology we can now actually manufacture gems instead of just manufacturing their scarcity. Of course, this would (and should) bring the whole house of cards crashing down if it wasn't for the effectiveness of the industry's marketing and propaganda. They've somehow managed to convince us that these manufactured gems are "fake" when they're essentially exactly the same thing.

Anyways, we stumbled on this Tumblr rant on the subject and found it highly entertaining. Keep scrolling to see it below.

Scummy Landlord Demands Extra Month's Rent On Move-Out, Wants to Keep Deposit Too, Guy Shuts Them Down

This predatory landlord has attempted to extort their tenant out of an additional month's rent and employed shady strategies to try and keep their deposit.

This story was posted to Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by Reddit user u/YerTime, who shared the story of their compliance with their landlord's exploitative terms. The story strikes many similar tunes to this story that was posted to the r/ProRevenge subreddit

Comments focused on the legalities surrounding this shady practice, which far too many opportunistic landlords utilize.

"In some states what they did is blatantly illegal," commented darthcoder. "In MA if they don't put your money in escrow, you are eligible for triple damages. If they don't itemize the damages or return your deposit in 30 days, triple damages."

At the university I attended, many university apartment complexes would utilize similar strategies to try and cheat student tenants out of their deposits. It was a given that, no matter what condition you left your unit in, you would never see your deposit again. They would always find some way to justify keeping it. In the apartment I lived in Junior year, we took extensive photos that showed we had left the unit in same-or-better condition. Yet, we never saw a dime of our deposit. This practice becomes even more predatory when you consider the fact that you need references from previous landlords to secure future housing. So, fighting for your deposit almost ensures that you won't be able to use them as a reference in the future.

My understanding is that this is extremely common in university towns and suburbs. Do you have a similar experience?

Worker Gets Wrongly Fired, Takes Entire International Division Down With Him

Holy smokes this might be one of the longest stories we have ever seen come out of Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit. It also might be one of the best-told stories we have ever seen come out of the platform.

This story was posted by Reddit user u/Warrior044 who shared an intricate and detailed account of when they were threatened to be fired by their boss' boss. They had been working for a massive American corporation that had various international divisions that were based in other countries.

In a lengthy introduction, u/Warrior044 describes how they were responsible for the operation of a machine that was relatively simple to operate but "immensely important" to the operations of the facility. The team operating the machine was marred by the presence of one incompetent individual, who also happened to be friends with the boss. Their incompetence would cause a series of cascading events that would bring the entire division down.

Guy Gives Friend a Bad Job Referral After Friend Ghosts Him

If you want to use someone as a job reference, it's probably best not to treat them like used garbage beforehand. Or is that just us?

This guy was "best" friends with his partner in crime before uncomfortable vulnerability drove a wedge in their relationship. The poster of the topic describes that he felt as if the two had grown close enough that he could open up to his friend more. He tried his "absolute best not to trauma dump," but something in what he said scared his friend away.

What is it with us guys and being completely uncomfortable with sharing (or having shared with us) the fact that one of us is not having a good time? It's such an insanely toxic thing; I've had friends who were clearly suffering and dealing with something but were utterly unable to open up. I've had friends I had no idea were dealing with demons.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AITA by the friend who was ghosted, Redditor u/evanaugh. He's wondering if he was in the wrong for giving this "friend" a bad reference.

All I have to say to that is this: Look, man, if he's not friend enough to help you deal with your problems, then he wasn't a friend. Friends stick by you and help you even when things are tough.

I mean, one thing is for sure; You won't be able to tell a recruiter that he was dependable or loyal.

Thread Exposes Shady Scam Practice Used By Debt Collectors and Banks

It's almost hard to believe that a (mostly) credible financial institution could resort to such predatory practices but the unfortunate thing is that it happens all of the time.

Something similar happened to me with one of the top medical institutions in the state where I grew up. Turns out, they had hidden fees that they charged into an "account" under your name every time you went for a visit. (This was in addition to the copay I had to make for my insurance.) They didn't tell you about these fees or notify you that you had a balance that needed to be paid when you went into a visit. The only way I ever would have noticed was if I had created and logged into an account on their website. I had no idea until I started receiving letters from a debt collection agency, which I was so confused about I was certain was a scam. So if that can happen with a respected organization just imagine what else is going on out there.

Anyways we came upon this thread while perusing the internet and thought it was a great read. See below for screenshots.

40+ Things to Unlock Your Nostalgia Gateway and Take You on a Wild Journey of Despair

Nostalgia is a double-edged sword of bliss and despair. When we put on our rose-tinted glasses and suspend our thoughts out into the blissfully distant realm of the past we're managing to escape and dissociate from whatever reality we are currently facing. But the thing you have to remember is that none of that is real. The past that you're remembering is only a slideshow of the best parts of the best and most memorable moments of your life and the world as it was at that time. It's a strange distortion of reality as it was, akin to that of something like an Instagram model's or travel blogger's story reel. You're not seeing all of the terrible, unedited, and unfiltered moments that went into making those highlights. So, not only is the reality you're suspending yourself into not real but when you're done doing the nostalgia equivalent of a TikTok death scroll you need to face your life again un edited and without filters. And that can only result in despair.

Since we've addressed how dangerous nostalgia can be… Here's a heavy dose of it. Enjoy these 40+ items that will take you on a trip of nostalgic bliss.

Guy Shares His Experience Trying to Sell A Couch Online, Every Response is A Scammer

This post is a grim narrative of the shocking state of online marketplaces and the exploitative nature of our society. What exactly has the world come to? You can't even sell a couch for $50 anymore without being drowned in a flood of opportunists looking to make a quick buck by accessing your private accounts. Wouldn't these people make more money if they just got a minimum wage job instead? Is low-grade scamming so lucrative that it pays an average income higher than $7.25 an hour?

This thread, which made it into Imgur's top trending posts, was posted to the popular image-sharing site with the title "PSA: Don't share money transfer info with people you don't know. All scams."

The post is comprised of screenshots of Facebook Marketplace conversations with prospective "buyers" who responded to a sale post they made for a used couch. Each of the responders were scammers trying to get personal information out of sellers to access their money transfer accounts and make unauthorized transfers.

This sparked conversation around the topic with readers and serves as an important reminder to be careful about who you are dealing with online. Scams are everywhere, and it's important to watch out for them. Take these obvious scams that people still fall for as great examples.

Karen Screams at Cashier, Attacks Manager, Gets Arrested

Who has a better story than Bran the Broken? Well, anyone with a first-hand story of watching a Karen getting arrested for starters.

This Reddit user, u/SimMinnie, shared a tale more epic (and better written) than the last season of Game of Thrones to the r/EntitledPeople subreddit. It's no secret that we love a good story about an entitled person getting their comeuppance and this one certainly ticks all the boxes.

u/SimMinnie explains that the story took place when they were working as a supermarket cashier. Which, like any customer service position, puts you straight in the firing line of an entitled Karen.

They go on to explain that things could get extremely hectic in the supermarket where they worked and on an extremely busy day things took a turn for the worst. A customer wanted a massive order processed through the supermarket's complex and time-consuming "delivery process." They turned to the rest of the customers waiting in line and tried to set the expectation that there would be a long wait. Of course, Karens are never understanding of such an expectation. The situation devolved into a catastrophe as Karen lost all of her marbles.

Landlord Forces Tennant to Show Apartment, They Bluntly Reveal Every Issue With the Place

This landlord threatened legal action against their tenant if the tenant refused to let them show the apartment while they were still living there. The tenant did not want the grief of going through a legal process with their terrible landlord, so they caved under pressure and allowed the apartment viewings to occur.

This thread was posted to the r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by the tenant after they faced a long list of issues with their current landlord. This included the landlord stealing $10k of overpayments from them and refusing to return it. They gave up battling and decided to comply with the landlord's demands maliciously.

"So now," the tenant explained, "Every potential renter gets the grand tour of EVERY SINGLE THING the landlord has failed to fix, as well as how egregiously long it's been since I requested repair."

"Additionally, they get a detailed explanation of how the management company stole my 10k overpayment and how I've been living rent-free for months because they refused to give it back."

IT Specialist Automates Entire Job, Does Job in Ten Minutes A Day

This poster claims to have set up a remote workstation for their tech job. And "in about a week" they were able to "write, debug, and perfect a simple script that performed [their] entire job."

It all just goes back to that old saying, often attributed to Billionaire Bill Gates, "I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it."

Often companies aren't willing to pay employees enough to warrant their extra effort and innovation. A lack of trust between the two parties can hinder actual progress as the employee often fears that their own innovation could make them redundant.

This is probably why we see stories like this popping up so frequently. When the chance presents itself, tech-savvy employees are more than happy to dramatically increase the efficiency of their tasks, but they need to know that they can trust their employer to reward that innovation, rather than blindly punish it.

All of this was what led Redditor u/throwaway59724 to automate their role at the first chance possible.

Their script was able to scan on-site drives for new files and then process them as required. u/throwaway59724 now reports that they now "Clock in every day, play video games or do whatever, and at the end of the day [they] look over the logs to make sure everything ran smoothly… then clock out. [They're] only at their desk maybe 10 minutes a day."

It sure sounds like u/throwaway59724 has unlocked a cheat code to life. All they had to do was enter the following into their menu screen at startup: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A.

Now, you too, armed with that knowledge can go unlock your own automated income.

Read on for the full story.

Boss Texts Vacationing Employee 15 Times to Cover A Shift, Employee Blocks Number

This employee is in a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend. After two months of being apart, they organized a vacation so that they could spend some quality time together.

Surprise, surprise… Just as she was leaving, her new boss pulled her aside and asked if she could stay to cover a shift since they were short-staffed. The employee had to pick up her boyfriend from the airport and get her vacation underway, so she declined.

An onslaught of messages from the boss soon followed, calling her names and asking her random questions to harass her. She then tried turning off her phone before resorting to blocking the boss's number.

The employee now wonders if she is in the wrong for blocking her boss's number. Her boss blew up at her when she returned to work, calling her unprofessional.

What's your take? Is she in the wrong here?

Weird Neighbor Records Guy On His Own Property, So He Gives Them A Show

What do you do when your strange neighbors are spying on you and recording your every move? Give them a show of course! If it was me, I would probably make every effort to create an elaborately interactive theater piece that convinced them that they were witnessing a serial killer at work. Every time I knew that they were watching they would "witness" a new suspicious piece of evidence that people were entering my home only to leave in suspiciously shaped garbage bags and carpets.

Well, this guy had the same idea but with a short simple execution when he decided to strike a "sexy" pose for his constantly-observing neighbor. We're going to add this to a long list of ways of dealing with terrible neighbors.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) subreddit by Redditor u/sexywaterhose. He was growing tired of the older woman next door watching his every move and decided to take matters into his own hands. Now he's wondering if he has crossed the line.

Funny Tweets to Look at Instead of Your Family

We're people, and we get bored. Maybe the point of being bored is that we're supposed to come up with ways to amuse ourselves or better our own situation. Maybe being bored is so intolerable because it's supposed to motivate us to work on things, build skills, and socialize with other real people. It's almost as if the bad feeling we get when we have nothing to do is something we can use to push ourselves onto bigger things and form stronger bonds with the people who are actually around us. That's something that might actually make us feel like we're learning and growing rather than repeating an endless cycle of hounding after the thoughts of people whose only talent is complaining in a sort of clever way.

Anyway here are the thoughts of other people to read while you're on the toilet at work, making your own user generated content.

Son Punished by Going Vegan for a Month, Family Overreacts

It feels like one of those things that should be obvious. If someone makes a lifestyle choice that affects you in no way whatsoever and doesn't hurt anyone, you're not in a great position to start harassing them. If you can't stand someone else's diet, congratulations, you don't have to eat like them. Under most circumstances.

This time around, this kid was giving his sister a hard time over not eating meat, so as punishment, the whole family decided to go vegan for a month. Proving himself to be the child that he is, this kid tattled to his grandparents, and now battle lines are being drawn. The kicker is, the kid is totally free to go buy and cook meat on his own if he truly wants to.

The internet was pretty supportive of this parenting decision.

Wife Won't Let Husband Use Her Car, Takes It Anyways, Internet Roasts Them Both

There are a few concerning dynamics to this relationship that are adding to its apparent disfunction. First of all, why the hell is this guy selling his only mode of private transportation to fund (what is essentially) a glorified party. Then he somehow sees fit to complain about the fact that he has to take public transportation? Secondly, why is his wife completely banning him from driving her vehicle? If his driving is really that bad then perhaps she has a point, otherwise, she needs to be a little more understanding. It's pretty clear from this post that this couple is not functioning as a team or a unit as they should be.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) subreddit by the wife who is wondering if she is in the wrong for telling her husband that he couldn't use her car.

Commenters proceeded to roast and ridicule both parties for being immature and refusing to work things out between them.

Son Refuses to Do Dishes Right, Forced to Eat off His “Clean” Dishes, Internet Approves

If you've ever had a friend, roommate or partner who didn't understand how doing dishes works, you might not realize just how important it can be to drill this kind of crap into someone's head. The idea that your laziness might have an affect on other people is important to instill, and the internet was totally onboard.

Almost everyone knows someone who can't do basic adult stuff, inconveniences the people around them, and then has the audacity to try brush it off or deflect other people's complaints by countercomplaining that they "didn't even do anything, why are you being like this." As small as it may seem, this kind of behavior can end up destroying relationships and ruining people's credibility. So it's just a little important to not be an asshole to whoever you live with.

This parent wondered if their punishment fit the crime, and everyone responded with a pretty resounding "hell yeah."
