First off, we love the Eugene Krabs (SpongeBob Squarepants) reference, for this narcissistic and stingy manager. It sounds like Eugene had deluded himself into believing everyone was a mere sack of mindless potatoes, and wouldn't ever fight back with a pro revenge, against his mistreatment. Oh boy, did he underestimate this employee. They ended up getting Eugene to have to pay the full "jerk tax", and he could've only paid a third of it, if he'd played by the rules and been a decent human being. Maybe Eugene learned his lesson.
