Twitter Thread: The Human Body's Evolutionary Leftovers

Awesome, our bodies are like natural history museums. Apparently, we're brimming with evolutionary leftovers, and Dorsa Amir mapped out a way to play around with some of these in a fun Twitter thread.

1.

Text - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Did you know the human body is full of evolutionary leftovers that no longer serve a purpose? These are called vestigial structures and they're fascinating. (1/8) O 512 2721K 48.8K

2.

Text - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Put your hand flat on a surface and touch your pinky to your thumb. Do you see a raised band in your wrist? That there's a vestigial muscle called the palmaris longus. It used to help you move around the trees. About 14% of us don't even have this muscle anymore. (2/8) present absent

3.

Wildlife - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Check out your ear. Do you see this little bump? That's called Darwin's tubercle. It used to help you move your ears around. Now that we have super-flexible necks, we don't need these anymore. (3/8)

4.

Joint - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Here's a more obvious one: the tailbone. This is the ghostly remainder of our lost tails, which were useful for balance & movement in trees. We still grow tails as embryos, but then attack and destroy them in the following weeks. Not the most efficient system. (4/8)

5.

Eye - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Ever wonder what this little pink thing in your eye is? This is the plica semilunaris. It used to be a third eyelid that would blink horizontally. You can see this in action in the eyes of many other animals. (5/8) plica semilunaris

6.

Text - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Oh, and you know how you sometimes get goosebumps when you're cold or scared? That's a vestigial reflex that used to raise body hair to make you appear bigger or trap an extra layer of heat for warmth. Some people can actually do this on purpose. (6/8)

7.

Text - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir Another cool reflex is the palmar grasp reflex. If you place your finger on an infant's palm (or feet!), they will try to grasp it. Ancestral primate babies would have used this to grasp on to their parents for transport. (7/8)

8.

Text - Dorsa Amir @DorsaAmir · 1d Replying to @DorsaAmir These are just a few pieces of evolutionary baggage handed down to you from your primate ancestors, among others. Your body is basically a natural history museum! (8/8)

Neighbors Ruin Family's Fence, Dad Installs Concrete Fence, Cars Get Wrecked

Dad took the kind of pro revenge that goes down history, and really deserves a spot in the hall of fame for pro revenges. Sounds like the neighbors were being troublemakers, so dad decided to install a concrete fence. That's a rock hard revenge if we've ever seen one.

Text - We live in a small private neighborhood, the neighbors are related to us more or less (distant relatives). Everybody here is a complete nutjob. They were constantly arguing over decades before me or my brother were even born. Our property line is kinda like a square and it is surrounded by road from two sides. Keep in mind that on one part of the road we let our neughbors use 1 square meter of the land so they could use the road safer and not damage our property This is cruicial informati

4.

Text - The truck driver runs over our fence. Nobody wanted to pay for the damage. Our fence is made out of multiple bushes, trees and a little bit of metal fence too. These plants were now completely destroyed and a part of metal fence completely bent. We had to replant these plants and place a new metal fence. My father told me this was not the first time this happend but actually third. I couldn't believe it when I heard this. So this is where the revenge begins. My father is a police officer

5.

Text - He dug up the property line marker and placed plastic barrels filled with rocks on our property. In the next 6 hours 3 of our neighbors came knocking on the door because they hit our plastic barrels filled with rocks. They were angry and wanted to call the cops. But they never did. Because everybody knew that little part of land was still our property. One neighbor in particular treathened my dad that he will throw a fucking pickaxe at my father's back. Over the period of 1 year these nei

6.

Text - My dad was furious and he changed his petty revenge into a prorevenge. He cut some wood to use it as a mold. He bought cement, sand and metal poles. One peaceful afternoon my father and I cemented that whole part of the land and placed some lovely flovers on top. So when they hit the concrete they can smell our flowers of victory/defeat. As we expected. 5 neighbors in total wrecked their cars on the new fence and nobody came knocking on the door. Tl:dr Neighbors ran over our fence. Did no

Garbage Moments that Belong on Trash Island

Trashy, selfish and antisocial behavior can come from anywhere. A boss, a landlord, a neighbor or even a loved one can engage in trashy behavior for almost no reason. Here are people who needlessly made life worse for the people around them. These are trashy moments that belong on garbage island.

Owner Responds To Absurd Review Of His Auto Shop

There's just no pleasing some people.

Text - Local Guide 14 reviews 2 photos *a year ago Be Aware!! I recently changed the starter here. They told me $780 first, as a student couldn't afford that. It's 1/5 value of my car. They brought it down to $700 with an $30 oil change value which I initially appreciated it as I borrowed some money from my friend and couldn't come up with more. I thought that was a good deal as they helped" me, I made some phone calls after I agreed to change and guess what was quoted $580 at express oil change

Text - We got your car in immediately ahead of all appointments. We diagnosed the starter issue and had a discussion with you. You wanted a new starter (not remanufactured) and it needed to be done as fast as possible because you had to get back on the road to Texas by 3:00 PM. I offered a remanufactured unit and a new unit, you still opted for the new unit at the higher price point. Interestingly enough, we DID do it for you. Let's not forget, I accepted a payment option that I have no idea how I am going to get the funds out of, I left the shop in my personal car to pick-up your starter because there was an acci

Tumblr Thread Says Movies Fuel Unrealistic Physical Standards

This Tumblr thread called out the impacts of movies in terms of fueling unrealistic physical standards, when it comes to fitness. It addresses how bodybuilding culture can manifest in convincing people that they should look a certain way (or that it'd be nice to), when in fact those very images are of folks that are sometimes severely dehydrated.

He starved down and dehydrated his already fit physique for a "look". The male soldiers on Spartacus: Blood an

As he said during interview with Steven Colbert, "If You go three days without water, You will die. Then, when You are halfway there they shout 'Roll it!" It's the same with professional bodybuilders who get into periods of extreme fasting and dehydration to lower their fat-to-muscle ratio to inhuman levels, all in hopes of making their muscle definition a

Bodybuilding - There are documented cases of incredibly fit and muscular bodybuilders fainting on the stage in the middle of their flexing routines, as well as several who outright died, because of cardiac arrest caused by their blood becoming too thick, due to long dehydration..
